* 𝑳𝑼𝑵𝑨𝑭𝑹𝑬𝒀𝑨 // 𝐀𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐘𝐒𝐈𝐒 𝐈 : 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐁𝐀𝐓 .

this is an old, re-worded headcanon regarding luna's behavior in battle. it is noteworthy to keep in mind that she is physically ill, chronically so. do not expect me to nerf down the effects of her illness and the strain of the covenants.

lunafreya is very much able to be ‘ destructive ’ even without the trident. she is manipulative and ruthless in order to get something or someone out of the way and uses tools or her environment to her advantage. ( exploding airships and luring luche to wear the ring of the lucii, burning him in the process, were good demonstrations for that ) on other hand, with the trident and her magical prowess, she practices light-elemental attacks. defensive barriers, offensive range spells, and supportive medical treatment or stat boosts. they are powerful, yes, but they eat her MP extremely, slowing her down, which is why she uses those spells wisely and not in a wasteful fashion. her strength lies within strategy & calculation, she would have been able to craft effective strategies with ignis.

while she can engage in close-range combat with the trident as her weapon, and is trained specifically with pole-arms, this is a last resort. she is aware of her own physical and mental limitations, and requires support of allies on a long term basis, especially after the awakening of the first astral whenever she escaped insomnia with the ring. she is indeed a loner by heart, but is not dull enough to not consider her own weakness which does come from how healing seasons and the covenants drain her vitality as well if we pay attention to the flashbacks. it’s no condition that suits to actively and repeatedly be involved in fights. due to those restrictions, that not only spike her fatigue but evoke flares of pain especially within the torso area due to the scourge coursing through the system of vital organs, she thinks twice about engaging in battle - and more or less retreats in most cases to avoid wasting any precious time and energy.

this does depend on the verse, though. after her ascension to godhood via her death she is naturally stronger than ever in contrast to her frail mortal form, so no one should be moronic enough to fight her and think they come out alive. battling selene won’t be funny and is most likely leading to immediate death. the only way you can win is having plot armor, or being an eldritch abomination from space. whilst selene is a titan goddess who is as passive as luna, she is also overwhelming, using her enormous power due to gravitational force more than anything. she can shake the world via magnetism and control the tides, therefore makes her very dangerous by sheer will.

* 𝑯𝑰𝑺𝑻𝑶𝑹𝑰𝑨 𝑻𝑬𝑵𝑬𝑩𝑹𝑼𝑺 𝑰 :    𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐎 .

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐅𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐒 :   the lush lands of the now-known tenebrae had been one of ruin and darkness long ago.  in the pre-historic age was humanity bestowed with fire, and the waters followed.  as ifrit would gift his sparks, leviathan would gift riverflow.  civilizations would be built with each those tools, but they never ceased their fascination for astronomy and selenology.  where the sun would obtain patron status would man establish solheim, the home of the sun ;  where they would revere the moon, they would establish maniheim, the home of the moon ;  where they would ask the stars for guidance, was the seat of the stjarna people.  maniheim’s and stjarna’s societies were interlocked and influenced each other with their belief in the afterlife, crossroads and prophecies, and had closer relations with each other than with solheim.  and though all three had different celestial objects in focus, they would all greet the dawn warmly.  the global population would worship eos the most as the mother of life.

while solheim was not the only civilization to rise to power, it was the last one to connect people before the astral war split nations apart with babylonic impact.  long has the war lasted and none of their social structures survived.  an era of turmoil gave rise to the darkness that people would soon interpret as the curse of the stars.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐓𝐎-𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑 :    during the time of war emerged factions, and the messengers of defeated deity fell from heaven right into the ruins of civilization. some of them, lingering upon maniheim-soil which would simply become known as the "dark land", fell in love with humans and procreated, their offspring dubbed the children of sin.  the line of the fleurets began with skadi, a daughter of sin, born of eos' messenger and a wintery man who originated from the western parts of the continent. she would wander over barren hills, hear the voices of angels, and grew up distanced from her peers.  years pass and she hardly shown any signs of aging, her father long lost to plague and her mother executed. ere she, too, would beget a child with a mortal does bahamut's messenger find her and announce the punishment for her and her descendants : ever shall this blood of molten dawn and rotten light that understands the word of gods bear this burden till the last one falls. ever shall the sons of eos and the daughters of her messenger be the token of guilt.  the draconian shall claim the crossing between clay and ichor.

while skadi had not been bahamut's chosen blood, her daughters and granddaughters would evolve traits closest to the soon-to-appear first oracle aera and her sister gullveig. and gullveig, she'd one day beget another line of descendants with another messenger : selene's.

* 𝐒𝐌𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐍 𝐋𝐈𝐒𝐓 𝐈𝐈 .

i. a little headcanon ( from an earlier post ) with @asterites includes the perfidious lady cousin of the fleuret siblings, cytherea, who, in good old fleuret family tradition, perishes.  but not before turning into a daemon that resembles siren from ff11. if iedolas still had an implied son ( short-haired blondie from the versus trailers ) she probably would have had a scandalous affair with him while they planned to overthrow niflheim together via to their shared greed for power.

ii. while luna has neither a particular eating disorder nor an unhealthy relationship with food, she does have the tendency to self-neglect due to overworking, which results in slight underweight and a bit of hair loss / hair thinning. that does not mean she finds no enjoyment in food or that she consumes with guilt attached, quite the opposite ; she simply finds little time to indulge. if she gave herself the chance to eat regularly, she'd find back to a healthy weight without much issue.

iii. opposite to what little we've seen of the pages within the notebook that luna and noctis exchange, she likes to decorate her entries with little ( bad ) scribbles that go along with her letter-long ( fancy ) texts. of course, over the years have assembled multiple books, filled with smaller or longer notes, insignificant or emotionally charged alike. she lets noctis vent more than she allows herself to, but sometimes even she finds herself writing down what she is feeling in her political prison.

iv.  as much as square enix wants the sylleblossom to be associated with the relationship of luna & noctis because they keep showing the pressed flower in the journal, plus her death scene / the scene with ravus --- the only two times i accept this flower in relation to her and why i think she nurtures them, are : one. a field full with its blue petals appear like a sea and therefore creates a visual dynamic that reminds of the moon and its control over the ocean. two. sylleblossoms highly resemble gentiana’s and are a direct hint towards the connection between the messengers and the oracles, since the flower is native to tenebrae.  other than that i just take the lunar tear out of nier and apply it as luna’s personal flower, because of the fact it grows at a lost shrine ( i oft like to symbolize that the moon as selene's forsaken body is sort of like a lost shrine ) and is said to perform miracles which is a reference to luna’s entire healer image.

*  𝐎𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐋𝐄𝐒 // 𝐀𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐘𝐒𝐈𝐒 𝐈𝐈 : 𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐂 . 

i.    latin is the most common language eosian nobility and royalty have derived their names from.  nonetheless, the fleuret line, at times, does also use a variety of freyja’s names for their daughters.  the norse goddess freyja had gone by several identities during her voyage in search for her lost husband, as well as those that she assumed as she was impaled and burned three times by the aesir and then happens to be reborn each instance.  

this includes names such as :    gef / gefn  ( the giver ) ,  hörn  ( flaxen ) ,  mardöll  ( sea brightener, or the one who makes the sea swell ) ,  skjálf  ( shaker ) ,  vanadis ( the dis / fate spirit of the vanir ) ,  gullveig  ( gold-thread ) ,  and heidr ( bright, clear ).

not every child would have been bestowed a name that referenced freyja, however, here could be examples of this practice :

gullveig was the first healer-oracle after aera and ardyn’s demise, and built the fleuret royalty.

lunafreya may be partly named after her maternal grandmother freyja.  an oracle who could have immensely committed to the purification of the dead, and was therefore occasionally nicknamed valfreyja  ( the lady of the slain ).  she had two daughters :  sylva and hnoss. 

the mysterious oracle whose temporary successor was a lucian king could have had one of frejya's names, like mardöll.

ii.    the standard arm of the oracles is a trident, the symbolism of which is found in lunafreya’s name entirely.  it primarily comes from the connection between freyja’s father being the sea god njördr and the greco-roman equivalent of the oceanic god poseidon / neptune whose iconic weapon is the trident, in addition with the fact that the moon has magnetic control over the tides.  

iii.    the trident is not the only tie to water that is evident for the fleuret house. the sylleblossom as a native flower to tenebrae, en masse, resembles a whole sea in the clouds.  this opens the door for the assumption that societies and cultures in the tenebraen lands used to have a deep spiritual connection with water and the seas, as opposed to the ancient peoples of solheim, who worshipped the fire ; and the earlier oracles, perchance, still were tethered too those beliefs to praise water’s purifying qualities that would cleanse the souls of those that perished of the still wide-spread disease. water is both purifying and symbolized death for the ancients, which is visually portrayed within luna's death sequence.

iv. those of fleuret blood are semi-immune to the flames of the lucii ring.  while the ring drains slowly the vitality of the king who wears it, the holy fire is a defense mechanism for those unworthy and would claim their life either instantly, or as a price for the temporary use of its power.  there are two instances of exceptions that were spared from this.  ravus nox fleuret, who was of fleuret blood and unworthy, would be branded but not wholly engulfed.  and ignis, who was of no particular blood, but was given the power as a necessity to protect its true bearer, and was as reward excused with the price of his sight.

  *  𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐂𝐊 𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐍𝐄 𝐌𝐄𝐓𝐀 .

i.    selene, in context of ffxv lore, is an astral, but of course, not part of the hexatheon.  given her role as the moon, she is bound to eos and plays a vital part in the planet’s balance. 

ii.    on this blog, there are several categories of astrals, including sub-species to which less powerful divinities and messengers count.  1 )  the main hexatheon that rule the divine hierarchy, are elemental deities and the primary guardians of the planet.  2 )  while the elemental astrals shaped the planet with their resources, they required the assistance of their luminous brethren who provided their light.  sun, moon, and dawn are siblings who contribute to the planet’s creation and of them, eos received the most respect, hence they named the globe after her.

iii.    in parallel to the greek selene’s battle against the feared TYPHOEUS, the astral selene battled against a great manifestation of the star scourge risen in the astral war, and from this wrestle, received scars / craters and fell into a deep slumber.

iv.    now comatose, selene dreams.  and through this, experiences an out-of-body wandering and incarnated into the oracle bloodline.  ironically with the chaos of the star scourge, she would be able to ascend to godhood and return to her lunar body.

v.    all luminous deities have been affected by the scourge in some way or another and have then fallen one by one ever since.  their absence has caused the plague to grow larger with every coming night.

  *   𝐒𝐌𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐍 𝐋𝐈𝐒𝐓 .

i.    tenebrae’s native tongue is based on icelandic and french.

ii.    luna is not gifted in drawing, and frankly is horrible at it, but it still belongs to one of her hobbies, along with journaling and gardening.  she tends to more abstract painting, simply for a creative outlet that requires not much technical skill.

iii.    her artistic affiliation is rather defined by singing, which is more a religious practice as oracle, hence there is only rarely a personal attachment and pride in her angelic voice.  she can barely tend to her favorites of traditional tenebraen folk songs and naturally has to participate in choirs and sacred ceremonies.  as a child, she began to despise singing, and would’ve continued so, had there not been a few examples she could sing in private :  1  /  2  /  3.

iv.    that car scene in kingsglaive where she would take control of the wheel was improvised.  she doesn’t have a license.

v.    she had a grandmother called freyja and was named after her.

vi.    she favors perfumes with mild floral scents, not too sweet or overwhelming, uses them as per her mood, not necessarily the same every day, and tends to experiment.  one day she wears fragrance made from sylleblossom extracts, on another one from lilies or jasmine.

vii.    it is evident that she does not keep sylleblossoms in her room at all times.  perchance the decoration varies from blue poppies, gentianas, or yellow / purple oxeye daisies, whatever the seasons provide.  

viii.    while she is most often seen in white or silvery dresses, she does like to wear black or blue as well.

ix.    for the most part, obviously, her relationship with niflheim’s military is one of suspicion and hostility.  however, there was one soldier who stood watch over her not very long after the invasion, guarded her closely and soon became more a father she never had.  the one exception she made in terms of trusting the wrong side.  the crescent-shaped pendant is an item he gifted to her on her 16th birthday.  one day, he vanished, and luna was left alone with a report of him to be presumed dead.

x.    if there is an alternative timeline where luna survives, she would return to a shorter haircut.

  *  𝐎𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐋𝐄𝐒    //    𝐀𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐘𝐒𝐈𝐒 𝐈  :    𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐋 .

i.    priesthood and prophethood go hand in hand within the fleuret line.  the magic of oracles is relatively distinct from that of the lucian kings or their warriors.  they receive the word of the gods and the divination of time, understand the astral tongue and the language of the broken heavens, decipher the encrypted vocabulary of the celestials.  they heal, they hear and know, for they and the messengers are closer in relation than gods and man. 

ii.    the practice itself is a form of sacred shamanism    (  derived from seidr of norse society  )    which invokes the shaping of the future, the oracular foresight, incantations that beckon the dawn of tomorrow and the sunlight it bestows, to deliver eos from the grim-reaping plague which worsens in waves as the millenia pass by.  if an oracle is not present to spellcast, and to cure, the night grows rapidly longer and daemonification has free rein.  their healing is absorbtion as they consume the plague with touch.  the absorbed scorge eats on and corrupts the cells, expands to feast on internal organs to activate a decaying process, twist them into the darkness of the night    (  shown by the way ink-like blood leaks both out of ardyn and lunafreya  )

for this reason, oracles normally do not officially carry on the role from their mothers before they reach circa 26-30 years of age and have given birth to children to continue the bloodline before that.  a later succession is common custom in order to avoid any damaging of sexual organs resulting in miscarriage, or daemonification of the fetus nestled in the womb.  however, they haste to become young mothers when they are legal of age.

lunafreya’s early succession at 16 is an abnormality and unusual, hence being the ‘youngest oracle in history’, and as such she decreases the likelihood immensely to bear children herself.  had she not prematurely died from a dagger’s injury, she would either be rendered infertile, or be incredibly hesitant to procreate.

unlike ardyn lucis caelum, fleuret prophets are not bound to become immortal.  rather, their mortality increases quite a bit, and the oracles of yore had since the genesis of their traditions always led shorter lives and they pass away before any mutations can occur.  their average lifespan entails roughly 50 - 60 years.  lunafreya, following her calling like she did, would have potentially died at 40 - 50.  

iii.    astrals and messengers are not the only spiritual entities the oracles commune with.  man being a work of astral hand, and their essence consisting of stardust, the oracles can partly see and speak with the fading particles of souls, soothe the dead, and purify them if necessary.

iv.    traditional / ceremonial gear, as we can see here and here consist of lily-white gowns and matching veiling hats.  a description of seidr sorceresses / seeresses describes one wearing a blue mantle with a staff in her hand.  the blue mantle is worn by the queens, and the staff is represented by the trident.  a parallel to freyja, the goddess associated with seidr, should be also noted in sylva’s feathered mantle, for freyja is in possession of a feathered cloak that grants one the ability to fly.

v.    the role itself is primarily reserved for women of the fleuret house, as the people of tenebrae honored their first queen posthumous.  while as per nature of heritage, male members of the bloodline are capable of practicing, it is socially inacceptable for them to claim the right to it.  nonetheless, some had to become oracle under special circumstances, such as the mother or sister prematurely passing or falling ill via other diseases or disablements, or the male being an only-child, although that would be rare ;  thusly he aids the people instead, sings to the slumbering gods to receive their blessings and rule the queendom, albeit immensely critizised by his subjects.  women who never were able to use this magic were seen as incomplete and dysfunctional, and their brothers who were able, were seen as bad omens or false prophets.

vi.    sólarljóð / the song of the sun is preached and popularized via ceremonies to worship and materialize the sun light into the future.  other types of song probably include the stars, moon, dawn, and the world.
