Avatar siempre fue de mis series favoritas, con personajes entrañable, una gran trama , y en años recientes, me di cuenta que es una gran crítica al Colonialismo, y es un gran tema , pero hoy nos dedicaremos a hablar de las mujeres en avatar, y porque son revolucionarias aún hoy en día , como hay muchos,hablaremos de estas por elementos
Iniciaremos hablando del estereotipo de la mujer fuerte, este es un estereotipo que permeo la cultura pop desde hace años, donde se ve a una mujer teniendo la misma fuerza ,capacidades, determinación etc, relacionadas al género masculino, esto estuvo bien al principio, pero con forme fueron pasando los años, esto atrajo mensajes problemáticos
Como que muy pocas mujeres podrían brillar, y solo eran las mujeres muuuuuy talentosas , casi diosas,las que podían hacerlo, llevo a que las protagonistas rechazaran su feminidad, en pro de aceptar cosas más masculinas, hay más características, pero solo nos sentaremos en estos
Iniciemos con katara, una chica que tienen un gran talento para el agua control, que de hecho,a diferencia del tropo ya mencionado , esta no es el prodigio más grande del mundo , es muy talentosa, pero la trama nunca le quita su humanidad volviéndola una diosa inalcanzable
De hecho, para entender esto, hay que ir a la pelea con pakku, donde el la vence , en cualquier caricatura promedio ,ella lo habría vencido a el , y el solo la respetaría por "ser más fuerte que la mayoría de chicas", pero no, a qui , katara respeta a las mujeres de la tribu, y su arte de curación
Pero aún a si se enfrenta al maestro pakku, y las mujeres la apoyan, y aún cuando pierde la batalla, gana la guerra, no con actos de fuerza bruta ,si no con palabras,donde le hace ver al maestro pakku como el machismo afecta a las personas, a sus seres queridos, y el respeta a katara, no porque sea mejor que otras mujeres, si no porque el se da cuenta de sus errores
Y ya que hablamos de los maestros agua, tenemos a otra víctima del sexismo de la tribu, yue,en otras historias, hubiera sido la enemiga de katara , solo por seguir con la tradición que las oprime,pero te dicen que hay algo más profundo , un amor incondicionalmente a su cultura, no quiere casarse, pero sabe que no hay muchas opciones para ella, la trama nos invita a entender a yue, sin la necesidad de masculinisarla
Claro, no niego que entra en el catálogo de mujer en el refrigerador, donde el personaje femenino solo sirve para morir de forma horrible, y dar lástima al personaje masculino (cof cof Bianca di angelo cof) de hecho, siendo lo último lo mas significativo, donde vemos rastros de tristesa en sokka por ella, pero al menos rompieron el tropo de la víctima que muere de forma horrible
En cualquier otra serie hubiera sido asesinada de forma horrible, viéndola más como un objeto para lástimar , pero no, es ella la que toma el control de la situación,toma una decisión,por su cultura, ella no muere de forma horrible, muere de una forma valiente, significativa, y lo más importante, bajo sus propios términos
Lo que me llama a hablar de kia , y como también invierte este tropo de cierta forma , siendo una madre que se sacrificó por katara, sonará extraño, pero la mayoría de heroínas toman inspiración de sus padres, el ejemplo que mejor se me ocurre es mulan
Pero no, aquí es katara la que la ve como su heroína , por su gran sacrificio, que si,también podría entrar como el estereotipo de la mujer en el congelador, pero no, porque mientras en dicho estereotipo, hubiera sido un objeto o hecho, que habría provocado o avanzado el desarrollo de un personaje masculino, a qui es con uno femenino , con katara
Y al igual que con yue, la sería hace lo posible para sacarla del papel de víctima, con katara y zuko hablando de lo valiente que fue, además, de que el objetivo de la mujer en el refrigerador es, que el protagonista se venge al final, que al igual no pasa, nos dan una lección de como dejar ir a un ser querido , que claro, tuvo que ver más con el desarrollo de katara que el como vemos a su madre, pero no quita que por un momento, no vimos a kia como una víctima, si no como una heroína y la inspiración de otra
El siguiente personaje es hama, un personaje...controversial, pero de eso hablamos en otra ocasión, hoy hablaremos de su representación como villana ,que lamentablemente, cumple con un estereotipo sexista , la mujer vieja y fea siendo enemiga de la heroína valiente , hermosa y joven, pero , mientras en otras historias sería una historia de víctima y victimario, además de no profundizar mucho en ella , o ser la segunda debajo de un hombre
Aquí la relación con katara se ve como la 2 iguales,lo que podría volverse katara de no controlar bien sus poderes, y dejar ir el rencor , le dan profundidad, hacen que la podamos entender, y hasta la podamos apoyar,mientras que en otras series seria solo...fuerte y ya , o solo avisaría de katara ...y ya
Lo que me regresa al estereotipo de la mujer fuerte,y como a diferencia de ese estereotipo, estas mujeres no tienen que rechazar su feminidad solo por ser fuertes, o ser heroínas, los escritores las dejaron vivir su feminidad
Y antes de terminar con esto, hablaremos de estereotipos asociados a las mujeres de color , más que todo las mujeres nativas americanas, que de paso, esto se basa en lecturas que hize de personas estadounidenses,donde se creo la serie y donde no vivo, que pertenecen a estas etnias , y si, se que en teoría son razas de fantasía, pero no quita que los rasgos e historia de estas mujeres, se parezca al físico de estas personas, además, bajo esa excusa de que no son razas reales, porque tanto arguende para que la sirenita sea blanca o no?, es una criatura mitológica, no tiene porque tener raza humana si la vemos desde esta perspectiva, en todo caso debería de ser verde , mejor volvamos al tema
Hay 2 estereotipo que han dañado a las mujeres de color en todo el mundo, pero que son más comunes en las historias estadounidenses , la mujer de color promiscua , y la mujer de color enojona
La primera es básicamente ,ver a las mujeres de color como objetos sexuales,ante la mirada de un hombre blanco, cosificandolas, se usó por mucho tiempo para justificar violaciones , ejemplos hay muchos , esmeralda , jasmin , chel, etc
Pero a qui no, a qui, se reslta la belleza de katara o yue, sin tener que sexualisarlas, talvez las miradas soñadoras de anng a katara su pueden mal interpretarse , pero al final del día, avatar evitó este tropo más que otras caricaturas de su poca , miren a paulina Sánchez en Danny phantom , que es latina ,pero forma parte de este tropo
También está el ver a las mujeres de color como enojonas, personas que se enojan por cualquier cosa, esto hizo ver a las mujeres de color como "menos mujeres", que las mujeres blancas , a qui no pasa eso, si se ve el enojo de varios de estos personajes, pero siempre está justificado, los escritos prefirieron resaltar otras características, su amor a su cultura,su heroísmo, su inteligencia, incluso su inteligencia y villanía
En conclusión, avatar talvez ni sea perfecto en la representación femenina, pero si logró dar la vuelta a tropos y estereotipos de una forma u otra

Flora (the youngest) is Izumi and the oldest would be,,,I think I’m making an OC child lol. Pretty much, the manor is haunted. That’s the gist, but it’s much more complex and I’d recommend watching it bc it’s AMAZING.

I actually started shipping this quite recently!! I love tyzula, and tophzula, and katoph, and just recently read the ty Lee and Toph comic so my kind just immediately jumped here. They’d be so cute!!! I know all female poly ships (especially ones that have more than three) aren’t popular in this fandom but like I actually love this a lot??? I think they’d be pretty awesome together and since I hc ty Lee as an air nomad descendant it would be like the four nations.

Anyone from the 80s, 90s and early 2000s know Yue and Toya were big for a guy couple on TV let alone anime, besides that though these were all my favorite characters and this will always be one of the best animes. You can not have anime now without anime from before!

realized i had never drawn yue nor lu ten before and that was deeply upsetting
it’s about making personal sacrifices for the sake of duty, the responsibility to one’s people, and knowing where you are needed most.
thinking abt how the reason yue liked sokka was because he was an awkward nerd who didn’t actually think he had a shot with her, as opposed to the obtuse surfer dudes vying for her attention (and the consequent position of power being her husband puts them in). sokka called hahn “soulless” when he talked about the “perks” of being with yue, because he, unlike the bros of the nwt, saw past her status—he liked spending time with her and making her laugh. yue is immediately endeared to sokka because he’s so clearly awkward and inexperienced and earnest, which proved a refreshing change of pace. to yue, sokka’s and his bright-eyed sincerity was an escape. yue was the only person sokka ever asked out (to do an activity with, to be precise), but she initiated all of their kisses. suki kissed sokka first, on kyoshi island, and then again at the serpent’s pass. only once sokka knew for sure what she wanted did he try to kiss her. both of sokka’s relationships are founded upon mutual respect and communication, and both suki and yue are impressed and endeared by his humility. so why do ppl wanna paint him as some smooth-talking, cocky or even blustering ladies’ man.... because he had two (2) whole girlfriends, whose arcs complement each other and develop his character in significant ways? yeah girls like sokka. but it’s not like he’s doing anything to encourage that. he is just... standing there...... bein his nerdy self.......

Princess Yue of the Northern Water Tribe
Finally in the Northern Water Tribe at the end of Book 1! We meet the wonderful Princess Yue and shenanigans ensue. I wanted the Northern and Southern Water Tribes to have related yet distinct tastes in fashion. Yue is still wearing a fantasy combination of Inuit/Yakut/Mongolian clothing but with a little bit of Great Plains Indigenous Regalia. Oh and her very important hair reference to Chinese "fairy maidens" (It's a Tang* Dynasty hairstyle associated with minor deities).
