If you have the time and if you don't mind, what are some books you really recommend? Doesn't have to be all time faves, but anything that pops into mind that you want more ppl to read and love, Extra points if lgbt+ , i got the whole summer with little to do and i wanna spend it reading some good quality writing and honestly so far your recs have introduced me to so many faves its unbelievable

[blushes profusely] oh wow, thank you!!!  i’m so glad you’ve trusted me enough to check out some of the stuff i reblog; that is like the ultimate compliment, i can’t even???  i don’t mind at all(!), fair warning though: i only started recording what i read partway through last year and my mind is like a sieve so i’ll do my absolute best to remember what’s sang to me in the recent past.  warning number two: i’m in an open relationship with absolutely every genre out there so i’ll try to note which belongs where so you can avoid those that hold no interest for you.

LGBT+

i’ll give you the sun.  i loved this book, the writing is fucking transformative and all the characters are so damn likable, while still being realistically flawed human beings.

the raven cycle (tetralogy).  definitely my favorite series since harry potter.  the writing, the world-building, the characters, it’s all on top-form.  i wrote a little, mini non-spoilery review of it: here, back when i was better (worse?) wordly-wise and my feels were brand new.

more happy than not.  i’m still not sure how i feel about this book.  it was hard, but it felt very true to the characters and the lingo and style matched the ages of the players and i have a lot of respect for that.

the watchmaker of filigree street.  woooow i loved this book.  i admit ‘historical fiction’ kind of makes me cringe.  it never precludes me from reading a book but it does knock it down the list by a book or five because they’re often very dense and very clunky and end up taking me ages to get through.  but this one was gorgeous.  i loved the plot, the attention lovingly placed on every character and the historical elements.  the surprise gay in an already brilliant book felt like winning the lottery honestly.

captive prince (trilogy).  okay, truthfully, i’m only putting this on here because the second book is such a high point for me.  it was never bad at any point but it had unfortunately been hyped far too much for it to live up to my, admittedly, very high expectations.  hopefully it’ll fare better with you?

everything i never told you.  i go back and forth on this one.  i like the writing a lot, i like the LGBT aspect a lot, and i like the mystery aspect a lot but there are definitely characters i would cut out entirely for sheer predictability if i could and that killed a lot of my enjoyment at the time (but i think much more highly of it in retrospect?).  so, take that as you like.

aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe.  if there’s a book that handles its characters with more care or respect or consideration then i haven’t run into it.  i love the way this is written and the people it’s populated with.

flying lessons & other stories.  a bunch of uber talented authors writing a bunch of uber diverse and LGBT-focused stories and, yes, that is exactly as awesome as it sounds.

the song of achilles.  it is utterly heart-breaking but so rich, honestly.

FANTASY

the diviners.  (also has a minor LGBT character, who may play a bigger role in the sequel?)  fair warning, i have not read the sequel, lair of dreams, because it is somehow still not out in paperback (yes, i read physical books, yes, i pretty exclusively read paperbacks so i can lug them everywhere with me, YES, I PRE-ORDERED THIS ALMOST TWO YEARS AGO AND IT’S STILL NOT OUT, NOT THAT I’M BITTER ABOUT THAT OR ANYTHING) so i can’t speak to that one finishing on a high note as i don’t know.  but this was the first historical novel i managed to like in a long while.  it does such a good job of fusing in 1920s lingo and dress and aspects that i couldn’t help but love it.  add in the fantasy elements and i can admit i’m the perfect sucker for it.

the scorpio races.  i’m not sure why but it took me a long-ass time to get into this book, i wasn’t flipping pages with gusto until well towards the end but - especially as i was reading so much YA at the time - i really appreciated coming across a romance that lets both people come into it as themselves and stay themselves, neither puck nor sean were ever smashed or crumpled or shaved away to fit into their relationship, which was so refreshing.  plus the water horses were fucking cool.

the night circus.  the writing, the atmosphere, the circus.  just… it is all very whoa.

all the birds in the sky.  i loved this writing style and these characters and the magical elements.

CONTEMPORARY

i’ll meet you there.  there was something about this and i just… ended up liking it way more than i expected to.  i might’ve just read it at exactly the right time, i’m not sure, but i really enjoyed it.

the invoice.  this is honestly just hella cute and so freaking surreal.  swedes, man.

NON-FICTION

why not me?  i like mindy kaling a lot.  i make no apologies for that.  plus you can read both her books in about five seconds, haha.

SCIENCE FICTION

station eleven.  i loved this book.  the way the narrative is woven is so refreshing and i wish the comic book miranda was writing in this book was a real thing more than anything else in the woooorld.

illuminae.  hot DAMN this book was cool.  the plot was rock solid, the characters were hilarious and badass and the graphics made out of text and spiraling words and just the way this thing is put together?  shit, it’s worth your money and then some.

a robot in the garden.  okay this is just cute as hell.  i can’t even with tang, he’s the most adorable robot to ever adorable.

annihilation (southern reach trilogy).  (LGBT minor characters.)  okay, honestly?  i don’t know.  this was freaking zany but i was invested as fuck in all the kookiness for reasons i can’t articulately elaborate on.

the martian.  hilarious, engaging, SPACE.  what more do you want?

HORROR

things we lost in the fire.  this is more atmospheric than anything but, damn, could this get me wishing i wasn’t reading this in the dark or looking over my shoulder to make absolutely sure no one was standing behind me.  it’s a book of short stories (by the way, i love books of short stories and i definitely realize that is not true for everyone) and each one is so well-delivered and stylized.  i really enjoyed reading this.

let the right one in.  okay, this is legit horror so definitely stay away if you’re easily squicked out but it is harrrrrd to find good horror (at least in my opinion) and this definitely, definitely qualifies.

horrorstör.  i honestly had such low expectations for this, a horror story set in a wannabe-ikea, but it ended up being so ridiculous and strange and funny that i was won over by the finish.

the girl with all the gifts.  holy unique and well-executed zombie idea, batman!

SHORT STORIES

the bigness of the world.  there were definitely ones here that hit better than others but the ones i liked, i really liked!

GRAPHIC NOVELS (i read a lot of these so, um, prepare yourself)

saga.  (LGBT minor characters as well.)  this is world-building to a degree that i’m convinced did not exist before.  just, i can’t say enough amazing things about this series and the staggering amount of imagination that regularly goes into it.

ms. marvel.  heart-warming as fuck.  it’s definitely really easy to lose faith in the world these days, luckily kamala is there to remind you that people are primarily and genuinely good.

black science.  this is another one that took just an insane amount of imagination to cook up.  i got off to kind of a rocky start with this one but the gray-ness of all the characters really speaks to me, and that doesn’t really blossom until later in the series.

spider-man/deadpool.  this was very satisfying for my super duper spideypool-shipping mind.  joe and ed did us so good, and joe basically said in his sign-off: i made it absolutely as gay as they would let me, haha.

the wicked + the divine.  (LGBT minor characters that you’re going to get way too attached to, and retroactively.  it’s awful [sobs].)  the concept for this, gods reincarnating into teenagers before they burn up their hosts after a predetermined set of time, is so fucking cool.  the humor and the characters and the plot is all just aces.

iceman (LGBT MAIN CHARACTER).  okay, so this just started.  like issue #2 was only released days ago but 1) i am liking it so far and 2) marvel did it so dirty and barely advertised bobby - an openly homosexual superhero - was getting his own series, like, i found out about it the day before it went on sale and i keep my ear fairly close to the ground (not as close as some BY A LOT, but closer than the lay person i’d say) so if you can support it, please do!  pre-orders mean a lot in terms of numbers. :))))

descender.  admittedly, this starts out rooough.  because the main character, TIM-21 (and his little dog too), are annoying as hell.  he’s an android so there’s no dimension to him so he’s booooring as all get out but i am so glad i stuck with it through to the next trade because, probably picking up on the unsustainability of him as a main character, he gets shuffled off and the side characters get the stage and they rock so hard.

paper girls. (LGBT main characters.)  i’m kind of just convinced that brian k. vaughan can do no wrong at this point.  his plots are so tight and mind-blowing and badass.

monstress.  here’s a little tid-bit about me: female comic book writers are 100% more likely to get my money and my time because they are so damn rare and this series is unique, badass, and eye-opening.

black monday murders.  i’m a little premature with this since there’s only one volume and i usually try to wait until there are at least two but i check up on a volume two a lot so that definitely means something intrigued me!

nailbiter.  okay, i haven’t read the final volume yet ‘cause i’m reluctant to let it go but, so far, a series about multiple serial killers all being from the same town has me VERY HOOKED.

i wish i could remember more but this is honestly way better than i expected to do, haha.  they’re definitely not all my all-time faves but they’re ones that have stuck with me for one reason or another and that i didn’t feel i wasted my time on, so that’s something, right?  i hope this helps get you started and that you don’t think too awfully of me when you inevitably run across ones that aren’t your cup of tea!

Thoughts on Wayward Son

Okay, so here I go. Don't know if this will be long or not but I need to express my thoughts.

I read WS non-stop in one sitting and the pace was really fast and kept me going. I really did enjoy it. I love how much the world expanded, the new creatures that we met and the further explanation of the way the magic works is amazing. Also I love Shepard with my whole heart, he was a great addition to the group and helped with their dynamic plus it was interesting seeing them through a different perspective.

Now about Penny, I did enjoy her progress, even though Micah is a shitty person, it does makes sense and it helped Penny mature more, plus I liked her development with Shepard and her friendship with Baz!

Agatha... I didn't like her very much in Carry On but in WS I liked her chapters and how by the ending she kind of accepts that magic is part of her.

Now Simon and Baz, it broke my heart to see how they didn't communicate about their feelings, like they were hoping that by looking at each other the other one would understand what was going through their minds when it obviously doesn't work like that. It's kind of ironic that the magic system is based on the power words have but then they don't use them. It was frustrating to say the least.

I just wish I could take Simon by the shoulders and tell him "You matter, you're worth it, you're so much more than the chosen one, you don't need magic to be happy, you deserve love". It hurts to see Simon feel suffocated but also loving Baz and not telling him his feelings. I wish he would've continued going with the psychologist.

Baz also suffers a lot throughout the book, it's painful to see how much he loves Simon and it's beautiful but also sad how happy Baz gets when Simon kisses him. I loved all the cute moments between them, but then most of the time they went back to square one so that was confusing to me and really emotionally difficult to see.

I did love seeing Simon get jealous but then how is Baz supposed to know this if they don't really talk about it? Again, frustrating.

We all knew that Simon was depressed, but I was hoping the book would show Baz helping Simon get through it, both of them, together. Instead that didn't happen.

Then every time a cute scene/moment (by the way, chapter 41 is beautiful) came I was hanging onto them for dear life. I felt like "okay maybe I can handle it". But no, something else came and they never had a break.

By the ending, I was getting hopeful as Baz saw Simon lying there, thinking he was dead and called him "love". I thought that would've been the point that would made them talk to each other, but no, Simon didn't hear it.

Then Simon carried Baz and didn't let go of him showing how much Baz means to him. I thought okay so maybe this is the time they're finally going to tell each other how they feel in the beach scene...

It's sad to see how Simon does not know how much Baz loves him. It's heartbreaking how Simon thinks Baz would want to stay with Lamb (also fuck him). But I loved Baz's response, that quote is beautiful. Then Simon's reaction came and it crushed my heart. I wish Simon would've shown a small smile or just take Baz's hand or something. It really frustrates me how Baz is hopeful but then Simon shakes his head, that confused me and is what angers me the most, I wanted a little closure, just a little bit of hope and that would've made me happy.

Finally, Penny comes in cutting the conversation and clearly hinting at a third book which I'm anxiously waiting for.

Overall I loved Wayward Son, but I'm unbelievably frustrated and desperate to see them communicate. Just talking would've made everything better. I feel like they talked more at the ball at the end of Carry On than they did during this whole book.

Carry On was the perfect balance for me, when I finished it back in October 2015, all I felt was happiness, I fell in love with it and it was my go-to book for whenever I felt down or reached a reading slump. Now WS just makes me feel sad.

It breaks my heart how much I love them and how much it hurts to see them this way.

I don't think my heart will ever mend from this, at least until the next book comes out.

adam: uhh whats your favorite color

some gangsey/pynch things

so ronan is secretly a huge one direction fan. only adam knows this

and the gangsey figure it out one summer day when they’re all packed into the pig, windows rolled down, radio on, just bein aesthetic and all that

and a 1d song comes on the radio!! and no one really notices it at first because it’s turned down and the windows are open (plus the engine is noisy af as always)

when ronan starts humming the song from the front seat

and ganseys like………. “ronan,,, do u know this song??” turning up the volume a little

ronans all like hm? no huh

and adam grins wickedly, because he knows ronan’s secret and he’s about to get exposed big time

blue sees adam smile and jumps out of her seat as far as her seatbelt will let her, arms wrapped around ronan’s headrest, and yells “yOU DO KNOW THIS SONG”

adam laughs. bc he’s evil

and noah immediately reaches forward from the middle seat and turns up the volume

ronan is hardcore GLARING at adam

of course noah loves 1D, he’s basically a part of the band, so he starts singing loudly “YEAH, WE’LL BE DOIN WHAT WE DO”

and adam joins in, making full eye contact with ronan, “JUST PRETENDIN THAT WE’RE COOL”

ronan is now sitting in the front seat with his arms crossed and he’s absolutely FUMING

and now they’re all singing the lyrics, grinning and trying to get ronan to sing along

ronan turns around to glare at them all, but he sees adam laughing and singing and his eyes are sparkling, he’s shining, and he’s happy. and ronan loosens a little

just a little

so ronan rolls his eyes, sucks it up, and yells: “and if we get together, yeah, get together, don’t let the pictures leave your phone, ohhh”

blue and gansey cheer, and gansey turns up the volume to max when the chorus comes on, and now the whole gangsey is screaming the chorus, hands sticking out of windows, wind blowing in their faces, and they’re all smiling and happy and stupid:

LETS GO CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY TILL WE SEE THE SUN, I KNOW WE ONLY MET BUT LETS PRETEND ITS LOVE AND NEVER NEVER NEVER STOP FOR ANYONE

ronan’s shouting the song out too, and he locks eyes with a beaming adam, and ronan hasn’t felt this happy in a long time

blue is SCREECHING “tonight let’s get some and live while we’re young”

it’s just. so aesthetic. they’re all just so full of love and joy and they’re being carefree teenagers  and it’s just a perfect moment

in conclusion, ronan thinks 1D is hot (but his boyfriend’s hotter), noah is literally the epitome of a boy band singer, and they’re all just teens. let them be stupid teenagers

when adam’s not at college, he’s living with ronan at the barns (obviously)

so summers are pretty much bliss

when the whole gangsey isn’t over (which is often) adam and ronan just do Domestic Things together, and cooking/baking is one of them

they love baking together because they’re not even good

like they actually suck at making food. it almost always comes out inedible

they go out and buy a shit ton of baking ingredients/supplies, like just piling whatever they can find into a shopping cart, and take it back to the barns to pour it all into one bowl and stick it in the oven

they always blast music too!! but it’s one direction, because ronan is a 12 year old girl and he’s obsessed

so imagine: ronan and adam, faces and clothes smeared with cake batter (because of course making out while baking??), mixing all kinds of sugar and flour and baking powder into pots and pans and glass bowls, singing along stupidly to their favorite boy band, drunk on each other’s happiness. the sun is streaming through the windows and lighting up the whole kitchen and a light breeze is coming through the open sliding doors and it’s just perfect, they’re perfect, and they’re just living

(opal walks in, takes in the scene, and wordlessly turns around and walks out the door)

(they do this thing where they drive to the supermarket and make lists of ingredients for each other to get, and then race to see who can get all of their items first)

(once adam told ronan to get baking soda and ronan bought a huge bottle of diet coke)

(and one time adam just straight up bought bleach. who knows what he was thinking)

then they stuff everything in the oven and make out, laughing and giddy, until they smell burning and have to break apart

(adam likes to sit on the countertop so he and ronan are eye to eye, and he wraps his legs around ronan’s waist as they kiss)

one time gansey and blue make an impromptu visit (like normal,, they always just show up) and walk into the kitchen to find ingredients spilled and splattered all over the counters and cabinets, smoke pouring out of the oven and right next to it adam and ronan tangled up in each other, ronan with batter smeared across his cheek and adam, whose shirt is halfway over his head, with powdered sugar all over his hair.

(adam probably has batter on his fingers and ronan is probably licking it off. kinky)

blue bursts out laughing and gansey looks like he’s about to

adam and ronan smile wickedly—adam blushing significantly more than ronan—but ronan doesn’t back up and adam doesn’t unhook his legs from around ronan. so gansey sighs and pulls the mess of a cake out of the oven and immediately walks over to the trash can and just dumps the whole thing

ronan acts offended as they start to clean up

(adam tugs his shirt back down and ronan pouts)

(“get a room” definitely comes from blue)

as we're all anxiously awaiting the release of wayward son (I know that is understatement of the year but we're going to go with it) I just wanted to reiterate a point I know many people have already made about spoilers!

(I know this is the point at which everyone will start to groan, but please hear me out!!)

not everybody will have access to wayward son on september 24th!

for example, I live in the UK and here, it doesn't come out until october 3rd. (this isn't really much of a difference but it's enough for us to get spoiled!)

in many places it may not come out for months after sept. 24th, and these people do not deserve to be spoiled!!

so please, no spoilers at all until october 24th (a month after the US release)! and after this point, please be very careful to tag your spoilers so that people who have not had the chance to read it won't have to see them!

this is also helpful for slightly slower readers, or readers with very busy schedules! they don't deserve spoilers either!

in conclusion, TAG SPOILERS FOR WAYWARD SON!

Introducing… What The Plot?!

How does it work?

1.) Take a Prompt Card.

Ex. ’Tell us about the time a vampire hit on you.‘ 

2.) You have one minute to bullshit a story.

After the minute is up, the player next to you needs to continue your story and so on. 

However! There is also a pile of cards each with three words on it. Every turn you draw a card and have to use one of the three words from it in your story. Ex. breadstick, cactus, werewolf.’ If you don’t use one of the words during your turn, you lose points. If you can’t continue the story then you also lose points. And if your story is really awful, other players can play the ‘Boo Card’, causing you to lose a catastrophic amount of points. The player who is not the worst wins!

We have already found a supplier and a distribution center in both the US and Europe. We really want to know what you think. Let’s create this game together and make it the best it can possibly be. Are you in?

Fanfiction writer wanted!

I have to write it because of the tags I’ll use: It is an ANDREIL story, AFTG/TFC fandom.

Okay, here’s the thing, I have an idea for a fic but I know I can’t write it on my own, it’s a complicated story + my English vocabluary is limited, that is why I’m looking for someone who could be interested in writing it with me.

in canon kevin calls neil a child like, very casually and kind of condescendingly but let’s revamp it. it’s just his nickname for neil now.

and bc the foxes are who they are neil becomes Kevin’s Day’s child.

nicky, hollering at the top of his lungs: there goes kevin’s pride and joy!

when neil starts shit w/ the press he’s the problem child. kevin checks in literally every day when he graduates and neil’s like “??? you’re not my actual dad????? you do know that right? it’s important to me that you know that”

their relationship is more exasperated big brother vs little brother with zero self preservation but Neil is absolutely “kid” “kiddo” “child” to kevin and that’s just facts.

My biggest question from The Raven King is how did Riko dye Neil’s hair back to his natural color?

Did he un-dye it? Is that a thing? Does Riko know the secret for getting cheap bottle black hair dye out?

Did he take him to a beauty supply store and sort through the hair dye until they found the correct shade? Did they consult with one of the employees about how to cover up dyed black hair with auburn? Seems fake but okay.

It just doesn’t make any sense. Neil’s hair would be a mess. Like a teenager having their first identity crises mess.

Matt seeing Neil for the first time after getting back from winter break: “I know coach said not to say anything, but damn did you stop by a beauty school for the blind on your way back?”

Andrew as their on the roof after getting back from Easthaven: “I don’t know what the fuck is going on with your hair, but thanks for stomping out the ridiculous crush I was harboring on you.”
