Imagine Choir Member!Taeil being one of the seniors in the Chamber Choir, the choir with the most experienced and talented singers in the entire school. You were a new member, one of the youngest in the entire group, and you were sat in front of the Chamber Choir’s leader as they ran through the “initiation rules.” Each newcomer had to get a piece of paper signed by all the seniors, which was easier said than done. You ran around your school, trying to track down all the seniors and learn their names, and once you do find them, they wouldn’t sign your paper that easily. One of the seniors had you sing the school’s fight song, right there in the middle of the hallway with others watching, your cheeks red and voice wavering at all of the eyes on you. Another senior had you act out “Bend and Snap” from Legally Blonde in the middle of the cafeteria, other choir members mockingly applauding you. Of course, the other newcomers also had to go through these initiations, but they all promised you that Taeil’s initiation was the easiest.

You found him behind a piano in the choir room, squinting at some sheet music. You were prepared for him to give you a song to sing or a dance he wanted to see, but he just smiled and asked how you were settling into school while taking your paper from you. You were a bit confused, but answered his questions anyway. He kept eye contact with you, nodding along, and seemed like he genuinely enjoyed talking to you. A blush rose to your cheeks as you talk to your senior, but now it was for a completely different reason. “You’re really not going to make me sing or dance for you?” You asked wearily as he gave you back your paper. “Not unless you want to.” He laughs and sends you on your way. When you walk out of the room, you look down at your signature filled sheet, Taeil’s handwriting catching your attention: “maybe instead of singing or dancing, we go to the movies?” along with his phone number and a smiley face.

Your break-up wasn’t supposed to be a break up.

Initially, it was just a break.

Fresh out of college with your undergrads, drowning in debt and lacking in love, you told your boyfriend of three years, Kim Doyoung, that you needed a break. You had simply grown apart, and needed time to reprocess your relationship. Being the understanding man you knew him to be, he obliged.

You had expected it to last a week or two, maybe a month. But Doyoung had packed his necessities from your shared apartment and, with a kiss on your forehead, left for Taeyong’s place, promising to be back whenever you needed. But he never came back.

You didn’t really know what it was that kept you from calling him.

Perhaps it was that you were a writer. Your head in the clouds and your emotions always running wild, you constantly overthought every single detail of your relationship. You would keep telling yourself you needed more time away. That time grew from days, to weeks, to months, until it had been over a year since the last time Doyoung pressed his chapped lips to your skin in a chaste kiss.

Perhaps it was that Doyoung, as a law student, was far too emotionless and had no qualms giving you your infinite space, even as your relationship silently disintegrated. He respected your space, told you to reach out to him when you were ready. But you had never been ready.

Perhaps it was just that in your time apart, the love faded. You both came to realize this.

“no, jaemin, i swear to god, not that. anything but that,” you groaned, snatching a garment in a rather disgusting shade of purple out of your best friend’s hands, hurriedly hanging it up on a random rack before someone could judge you for having such bad taste in clothing.

“i wanted to see you in it!” jaemin pouted, reaching a hand out to pull out an equally hideous neon green sweater, “how about this?”

you gaped at him in disbelief, placing your hands on his shoulders slowly, “no. n-o- no. seriously, jaemin, if i’d known you were going to do this i wouldn’t have suggested picking out outfits for the other to try on.”

“fine,” jaemin huffed, putting down the sweater, “i’ll find you something decent, so go to the men’s section and stop hovering around me!”

a few minutes later, you were conflicted, wondering if a gray or white jacket would suit jaemin better, and got the fright of your life when someone whispered your name by your ear. of course, jaemin being jaemin, whispering suddenly next to your ear wasn’t out of the norm. 

“okay, i swear to god, if you’ve brought me another horrible outfit that my grandma would wear i will kill-” jaemin cut you off with a wide grin, shoving the white t-shirt into your face.

“so prettyyyyy,” he gushed, voice uncharacteristically soft and high, “this reminded me of you, y/n.”

you frowned at his words, “are you flirting with me?”

jaemin spread his arms wide like he’d just been pronounced the king of the world. “ah, perhaps i am. why, do you like it?”

“jaemin, it’s literally a plain white t-shirt, at this point i don’t know whether to feel flattered or to feel bad for your taste.”

“white t-shirts are really pretty, okay? i bet doyoung-hyung would look really good wearing this.”
