Do you think MXTX deals with themes of self-worth in all of her stories? I'm thinking of Luo BingHe, Wei WuXian, Xie Lian, and Hua Cheng specifically... but also Shen Jiu, Jiang Cheng, Jin GuangYao, and Mu Qing... are there similarities? Differences?

Daaamn, that’s a whole lotta characters to examine here XD

…And really, there’s only more to be added because self-worth is absolutely a recurring theme in MXTX’s stories, and a common hardship to grow from throughout individual arcs. I’d throw in Jin Ling, Qi Rong, Wen Ning and Zhuzhi-Lang too. 

There are certainly plenty of parallels & foils to be found and noticeable patterns are observable in the way self-worth is explored, especially in what caused it and how characters try to cope or compensate for it. 

To do some broad categorization (and some can fit in more than one category!):

Some have self-worth issues stem from the guilt of having committed horrendous acts at one time: Wei Wuxian, Xie Lian and Wen Ning

For MANY in which it’s the result of an abusive background: Jin Guangyao, Hua Cheng, Luo Binghe, Qi Rong, Zhuzhi-Lang and Shen Jiu. 

And for some it’s an inability to live up to expectations: Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling

Mu Qing is kind of a unique case, but uhhh more on him later. 

With the exception of the few antagonists who got tragic endings, we see most of these characters attain resolution in their arcs and move forward in life with greater confidence.

But what’s striking is just how consistently important human connections is shown to be at empowering people and healing the pain caused by those deep-seated insecurities. Having unconditional bonds are what allow even the villains in MXTX worlds to experience moments affirming their humanity. On the whole, connections are integral to the development of all these MXTX characters as they navigate through their issues with their self-worth, so let’s examine the various ways these two linked themes are explored. Since I’ve already written long-ass posts about Hua Cheng here and Wen Ning & Zhuzhi-Lang here, I won’t talk about them much. Also, Shen Jiu will be saved for another post 😉

Okay so what if Ladybugs identity wasn’t revealed to a main character first?

This is head canon btw that i think has a lot of potential.

Basically the idea is what if Ladybugs identity as Marinette is revealed to a less prominent character (basically not Chat Noir/Adrien, Alya, or any of the people in her inner circle). What if it was... Jagged Stone?

Picture this:

Jagged is just chilling out in a back alleyway for a break because his manager is really getting on his nerves when an akuma attack starts

He’s in a kinda hidden spot so at first glance the alley look empty and Marinette is like “oh perfect place to transform!”

Insert the whole Ladybug transformation here

So Jagged is just standing there like “WHAT? this spunky little designer is mf L A D Y B U G??!”

And proceeds to freak out in this alley until Ladybug comes back and detranforms, she looks around and oh shit

Marinette sees Jagged Stone just staring at her slack-jawed and she starts freaking out because nobody’s supposed to know even Chat doesn’t know, what is she supposed to do?

So they have a little talk about this being really secret, Jagged being the only one who knows, and how this could put him in danger if Hawkmoth suspects they know each other

Jagged totally understands he’s like “cool Marinette, i got you don’t even worry about it.” and immediately lets it slip to Penny

Luckily she’s the only one there so now the two people who know Ladybugs identity are Jagged Stone and Penny

I picture the Jagged and Marinette would get really close and he would help her out with Ladybug excuses. I think that he would turn into her bonus dad and Penny would be her bonus mom. Here are some helpful and sweet high jinks that would ensue:

Jagged and Marinette having little code words that they text to each other so that Marinette can basically say “call me I need an excuse to leave whatever i’m doing.”

Penny and Jagged getting super worried about Marinette staying healthy

Little family dinners at Jagged’s mansion or the Dupian-Cheng bakery

Marinette’s parents being really confused as to why their daughter just basically got adopted by Jagged Stone but welcoming him into the family none the less.

Basically Jagged and Penny talk to Tom and Sabine about how awesome Marinette is, the four adults get really close and are best friends (don’t fight me on this).

If Jagged is in the area he let’s Marinette transform in his limo or he’d just shelter her

Letting her know that projects she’s working on for him are due before he actually needs them so that if Ladybug stuff gets in the way he just lets her have more time

Being really concerned about the amount of sleep she’s getting

Letting her rant to him about school problems (cough cough Lila) because now she can tell someone why she knows for sure that Lila is lying

I feel like there is also good opportunities for revealing Lila with this head cannon.

Just picture:

Maybe there’s an assignment like show what a person who is close to you does in a day or interview a person you look up to so you can learn about their culture and life and then present to the class

Everyone is like “Lila you have so many cool people to choose from! You know so many celebrities, so who are you gonna interview?”

Marinette already knows that she is going to interview either Jagged Stone or Penny when Lila says, “why Jagged Stone of course! I could probably even get him to come into the class, but i’m not sure it might be too short notice.”

Marinette is just sitting here like: “I’m going to ruin this mans whole career.”

The day comes and Jagged Stone is in class! (Marinette decided to interview Penny and Jagged came to support Penny because she works so hard and he wants to be there when Marinette shares how awesome Penny is).

Jagged Spots Lila and glares at her, while Lila is like “shit!” everyone else is excited because Lila actually got Jagged Stone to come!

Now Lila’s plan was to say he couldn’t come and instead they did a video interview (you had to bring the person into class). Lila has edited clips together of his old interviews to make it seem like she was the one taking to him. But now Jagged was there, in person.

Lila presents right before Marinette, she probably says something like, “I didn’t know Jagged would make it so here was our video interview.” Everyone is like wow Lila so thoughtful so prepared but then Marinette goes...

And you can picture it, Jagged walks up to the front with her and Penny. Marinette does her presentation exactly how she planned it, just talking about Penny what she does for Jagged and what her life is like. Everyone is speechless

At the very end Jagged is like, “just a side note but i have never owned a kitten and i just met this Ms. Rossi today.” before sassy walking out of the classroom.

One more thing! Sorry this is so long. But this could also be great angst for Ladynoir. Chat gets really hurt because he finds out and thinks that Ladybug told mf Jagged Stone before him, her partner. Angst happens but then happy ending. Okay that’s it, I might add more to this idea later or I could try to make it but with another side character.

Mo Dao Zu Shi Fic Recs Post 2

Hey y’all really liked my post of fic recs for this fandom.  I’ve read more, so I’m back!  Still almost entirely Wangxian, mostly canon setting.

First up I gave this fic it’s own post as soon as I read it, but to repeat myself: Grand Pianos Crash Together by @megafaunatic (E, 11K, Complete, Wangxian) - This is my ultimate post-The Untamed/CQL fic.   It has such marvelous tension, where both WWX and LWJ want to be together and almost are acknowledging it, but they just…haven’t…quite…kissed…yet…  Covers a year of  separation from LWJ’s POV and the reunion on the mountain ridge and what happens next.

The (Several) Convenient Kidnappings of the Chief Cultivator by the Yiling Patriarch by MissCam (M, 4K, Oneshot, Wangxian) - Another ending for CQL, this one totally hilarious.  Turns out Lan Wangji is too virtuous to be Chief Cultivator, so no one really minds when the Yiling Patriarch keeps kidnapping him for extended periods of time.  Ultimately very sweet as well.

A Day in Yunmeng by suspiciouspopsicle (aka the Breaking Through series) (E, 13K/35K, 3 stories complete, Wangxian) - This rec is really for the series as a whole.  The first fic is rather hot and memorable, but it’s the arc of this canon divergent series as a whole that I really like.  It’s Yiling Patriarch/Lan Wangji starting from the scene with WWX’s undead handmaidens, which turns dark and sexy.  It’s a pretty dark and angsty take on this pair with lots of power games and WWX being pretty darn broken and LWJ just trying to reach him, but ultimately the two of them finding a way out of it.  May make you cry.  (Also, note bottom!LWJ)

Bind Me, Heal Me, Break Me by gotcocomilk (E, 11K, Complete, Wangxian) - Lan Wangji visits the Burial Mounds and stays.  Yiling Patriarch!Wei Wuxian is very unstable and self-hating in this one, but LWJ slowly gives him back his warmth and life.  Featuring lots of bottom!LWJ sex and resentful energy tentacles, and some very lovely language.  Really brittle and bitter and yet beautiful.  Healing through smut, one of my favorite things.

and so my heart beats wildly by @omgkatsudonplease (E, 106K, Complete, Wangxian) - I hadn’t read this yet when I made my last recs post but I have finally.  It’s Modern AU with cultivation, in which cultivation is a sport played in Hunger Games-like arenas.  Since both the author and I came from YOI fandom, the similarities of cultivation as a sport with figure skating are appreciated.  In fact, this feels a bit like a Yuri on Ice AU of MDZS.  Nicely done with WWX and LWJ as public rivals but maybe private friends…maybe more.  While being watched by a rabid fanbase including shippers.  Great plot, also.  And So Much Figure Skating Snark.

Words Fall Like Rain by marginalia (M, 1K, Oneshot, Wangxian) - WWX makes LWJ use his words to say what he wants in bed.  I just really like this and think it’s lovely.

it’s your soul by syriala (M, 3K, Oneshot, Wangxian) - Wangxian had a sexual relationship prior to WWX’s death but WWX doesn’t think LWJ returns his feelings.  He’s also self-conscious because he doesn’t have the same body that LWJ used to enjoy so much.  Somewhat heavy on the angst and pining, but a happy ending.  I’d been thinking about WWX’s insecurity aboiut his new body before reading this and it really did it well.

It’s Only Time by etymologyplayground  (T, 8K, Complete, Wangxian) - Set post-CQL and consisting mostly of letters written back and forth between WWX and LWJ.  I didn’t know how much I needed pining love letters written by these two until I started this fic.  This is one of those fics that will make you nearly DIE with the beautiful longing and gradual confessions.  Amazing, wonderful, genius, etc.  Plus the reunion.  Run, don’t walk to read this one.

yeah it’s true (that I fell for you) by @thirtysixsavefiles​ (M, 8K, Oneshit,  Lan Xichen/Nie Mingjue)  OMG it’s a different pairing!  It’s also modern AU.  Look I want LXC to have a happy ending and I love this ship but it’s not a happy one in canon.  But this..WWX makes an online dating profile for LXC who is convinced he’s being catfished when NMJ from his company starts texting him.  But playing along turns into genuine connection and sexy messages and…it’s funny and sweet and hot.  

let’s you and me go for a ride by @dreaming-fireflies (T, 21K, Complete, Wangxian) - Another author from YOI fandom who is now writing MDZS. Modern AU in which WWX and JC are motoGP racers and the Lans are wealthy sponsor of their team.  Sweet falling in love, with fairly dramatic plot that is well-translated to the new setting.  I really like all the character details and quietly sweet moments.

Here’s a spell for a clarifying sleep! I thought of sharing this since it’s become sort of my nightly routine ever since. Not to mention how I fell asleep during the making of this so yeah really effective.

What you’ll need:

✨ Sigil (to be drawn onto your skin using either your night moisturizer or even just tracing it onto you skin with your finger.)

✨ Calming sounds (optional)

✨A glass of water

✨Comfortable sleeping space

To begin, trace the sigil onto your skin, keep in mind your intent.

Next, take a sip of the water and think of it as cleansing your body. With the rest of the water, cleanse your space by focusing the negative energy onto it. You can throw away the water or save it to use for charging crystals or plants.

Lay down, place a hand on your chest or temple (depending on where you feel needs more clarity, emotion or mind).

Chant the following, imagine the energy enlighten you and ease your mind as you do:

✨ “Light of lady night embrace my weary form.”

✨ “Moonlight glow let your silver envelope me.”

✨ “Darkness hold back my demons and allow sunlight to fade it with you.”
