okay big talk time. in light of the UK Supreme Court ruling, i'm seeing a lot of posts about fandom spaces. i woke up to see a tiktok that says "if you write fanfic, there's blood on your hands too",,, so let's talk about it.

because there is no refuting that fandom spaces keep JKR relevant. there is no refuting that by producing any kind of media based on this franchise, we are engaging with her and we are keeping her universe relevant. we cannot deny that.

we often see people turn around and say "jkr would hateee what we write!" and that's true. that's so very true, but it isn't enough. your headcanons and your stories and your art Are Not Enough. particularly over on tiktok: if you post HP content over on that platform, you are promoting JKR. my existence in this space as a trans man is NOT an act of protest. everything else i do is, so what do we do about that?

we NEED to be talking about these things. about jkr, about her money, about her actions, about the bigotry in the source material, and if you are not in a position where you can have those conversations, then you need to be listening. because engagement with jkr is infact life of death.

and we carry that guilt. we do, of course we do. if you are somebody who hasn't yet been able to let go of this series like me, then we carry that guilt. even more so if you are a member of any of the communities that jkr has harmed - the guilt is heavy.

but,,, let me make one thing clear: this is not your guilt.

if you are not profiting her. directly, then you are carrying guilt that is not yours to carry. that guilt is hers to bear, and the lives we are about to lose are on her conscious. we have been forced, time and time again, to carry the weight of her bigotry.

but,,, we're carrying it. and i think there's a certain amount of guilt that makes us better. i think there's a certain amount of guilt that makes us more conscious human beings, and that makes us more receptive to these discussions.

you can use that guilt, you really can. you can talk. you can listen. you can educate. you can step away if the guilt gets too much. you can use that guilt for something good.

do NOT push it away. whilst it isn't ours to carry, we are not in a position where we can throw that guilt away and wash our hands of it - we are here, we are engaging, we have to accept that. if we simply pretend as though we are not, then all we do is cause harm.

because fandom spaces can do a lot of good, especially for those that jkr has harmed. fandom spaces can do so much good, but only if we are conscious of the ways in which we are engaging, and we are willing to sit and have these difficult conversations.

if i were not in the position i am in now, i would leave. i would leave this fandom space and at this point? i am in fact urging those of you are able to, to go. for your own sakes and the sakes of everyone around you.

but as someone who has been having conversations about JKR for ages? i am in no position to step back. i'm in no position to turn away and give up. not when there are so many people who benefit from these discussions and who benefit from safe spaces.

and the reason it's a safe space? it's because I Talk. because i Have These Discussions. and no matter how much i do, i am still promoting her when i go on to post a headcanon or update my fics. i am still promoting her when i engage in this space.

and there's still guilt.

don't chuck that guilt aside, let it fuel you in making safe spaces safe again.

there is absolutely no refuting that by being in this space we are causing harm. so if you are not in a position to leave this space, here's some things you can do to make it easier for everyone both in and out of it:

Listen. if you are not in a position to talk about JKR, then actively listen. actively listen, understand, process, and adapt.

Merchandise: stop posting your merch, secondhand or not. you know that you get comments asking "where did you get this!?", stop posting it. makes that small adjustment for wider good

Keep educated: on the bigotry in the books so that you aren't perpetuating it, on jkr's actions, on politics. keep educated as much as you can to make sure that you are not unwillingly causing harm in what you are doing

Block: block those who are going to the studios, who are posting merch, who are talking about the reboot, who are doing ANYTHING to support her. if you see a video? comment on it. the continued relevance of people in this space who have supported a bigot is Immense. do not allow for complacency - bigotry is bigotry no matter how many views it gets you.

and above all, hold that guilt. hold it. feel it. utilise it.

and if you are in a position where you can leave this space? then i encourage you to do so. i encourage you to Move On, and find new ventures. i encourage you to do that if you can. and if you can't, then i'll still be here to guide you through it all and keep having these difficult talks.

this accidentally got really long so everything’s below the cut!

Sirius is Always the middle spoon. he WILL NOT let anyone else be the middle spoon!!! the only exception is if Remus is flaring or James is really upset, aka if they Need it. if they just want it too bad

relatedly any of the 3 of them will whine and complain and be a bit grumpy if they wake up to one or both of their boyfriends out of bed. they all find it cute about each other lol

Sirius and James coddle the shit out of Remus when he’s flaring. at first he pushes back on it bc he doesn’t want to be infantilized or treated like he can’t take care of himself but he grows to realize they’re not doing it for those reasons but because they love him and why should he suffer if they can make it better? one of them is cuddling him At All Times unless he doesn’t want them. they bring him food in bed, they fix his pillows and blankets, they set the thermostat to whatever he needs to be comfortable.

Sirius and James like flustering Remus. it’s sooo so easy and they almost make a game/competition out of it, seeing how red they can make him before he gets away, how quickly they can fluster him by doing the littlest thing. strategies include: kissing all over his face, sitting on his lap, whispering Really sappy things in his ear, both of them kissing his cheeks at once, telling him how pretty he is, slapping his ass when he’s bent over doing laundry or something

honestly generally Remus gets pretty princess treatment. he’s their Baby he’s their princess he’s perfect he gets everythingggg he’s so pampered

James’ love language is..acts of service? and Sirius’ is words of affirmation, but Remus’ is quality time, so he struggles a lot with showing them he loves them in the way that feels most important to them. S & J adjust a lot quicker, they have a primary one for receiving but can slip into any for giving pretty naturally. but Rem struggles and has to consciously plan out ways to give them what they need. for a bit it’s a lot of really awkward “Sirius. you know, ummmm. i love you right?” at the randomest times, whispering really quietly into his ear that he missed him bc he’s too embarrassed to say it loud, etc. and a lot of awkward “do you need help with that?” to J and the strangest little acts of service like, hmm. R tidies up after him and sees that as an act of service; James obviously doesn’t. he offers to do what he thinks is a menial task once but doesn’t know J loooves doing it. he blurts out an offer to drive him to work once but J finds it more inconvenient because then he has to wait for a pickup. in canonverse he offers to chop his potions ingredients but then J is just standing around waiting for him to finish. makes the bed for them every morning but J doesn’t even care about a made bed? idk it’s just Really Awkward attempts but S & J find it really sweet and they don’t mind, they don’t feel like they Need it from him anyways. they’re happy with his love in any form. but they melt every time he tries even if it’s awkward and they can’t say it’s not really really nice once he figures it out.

when one of them is cooking the other 2 (or whoever’s home) are sitting on the counter watching and giving little forehead/cheek/nose kisses when they pass by and yapping and passing over utensils/ingredients.

they have 3 different toothpastes bc they all have Very Strong Opinions and cannot will not compromise. (S like standard colgate bc it’s sweeter/less strongly minty. R likes standard crest for the opposite reason. J likes…crest kids sparkle fun or something insane like that.)

Rem walks around the house in big shirt tiny boxers. S walks around shirtless & tiny boxers. J walks around shirtless & thick oversized sweatpants.

canonverse hc: over time their wands and magic all slowly meld and get used to each other til they can all cast comfortably with each other’s wands. it’s not the same as their own but extremely comfy + natural.

S & J love stealing R’s sweaters, R loves stealing S and J’s tees, socks and boxers are grab a random pair don’t know don’t care whose it is, S likes putting Rem in his clothes bc he looks so cuteeee. eventually they don’t even really have separate clothes tbh it’s just one giant shared collection.

S and J are pretty into PDA, nothing insane but like holding hands an arm around their waist cuddling up to each other a hand in a back pocket cheek kisses forehead kisses chaste mouth kisses, and R is very much Not. won’t even hold their hands sometimes. even their PDA makes him blush. so when they’re in public it often appears as if S and J are disgusting sappy boyfriends and R is the awkward uncomfortable third wheel. their friends think it’s hilarious

they have separate bedrooms! they don’t use them often, they spend 99% of their nights together huddled in one of their beds (all of them have a bed large enough for three) but they like having their own private space for times when they need it. R’s having an especially bad flare and being touched hurts, S is having a bad mental health day and needs to be alone for the reminder that he has his own private safe space now, J’s having a bad body image day and can’t handle being touched, etc. and not just for sleeping, sometimes they’ll hang out in their own room during the day if it’s that kind of day. sometimes they just want or need some space and it makes sense to have that option.

they also use it for one of them’s sick because they don’t wanna get each other sick, even though the other two insist they don’t mind and they’ll almost certainly get sick anyways. and then all three of them sleep in their separate beds bc the sick one will complain that it’s not fair the other two get to sleep together, even if it’s their own choice that all three of them aren’t sleeping together.

ahhhh yess i love this so much em!!! baby remus sees lyall wear his wizard robes and he wants to look as cool as his dad so he goes into his parents' closet to get some of hope's dresses!

or maybe he has a little dress-up suitcase in his room anyways with various old clothes to use for fun dress up games anyways so he diys the most beautiful robes out of some of those and one of hope's old dresses, he's sooo proud of his creation when he comes down for dinner wearing a bright orange dress with green and pink accents that drapes on behind him because he's way too small for it.

his parents both think he looks adorable and he asks if he can get some proper wizarding robes just like his dad? ofc he can, so lyall takes him shopping (to the big city!!!!) but before they even get to diagon alley, where they were meant to go for the robes, remus sees some dresses in a muggle shop window and neither lyall nor remus have been in muggle children's clothing stores before but lyall has some muggle money "just in case" so they go in and remus tries on all the robes (dresses) and chooses a brown corduroy pinafore dress, a mossy green flowy long skirt with a matching blouse and a bright pink princess dress that comes with sparkly shoes and glittery tights.

they are both very happy with these purchases and the cashier definitely thinks lyall is a very excentric gay uncle taking his little nephew shopping for costumes or something.

they're both soso happy and proud of their purchases when they show them to hope, she decides not to tell them about silly gendered muggle clothing norms because really, why does it matter what remus wears at home? they live in a remote cottage on the welsh countryside and remus has had so many struggles in his short life already, if the dresses make him happy then he gets to wear his dresses ("wizard robes just like dad!" "i look so prettyyyy!!" as he spins around in his new dresses happily)!

he never grows out of wearing them and goes to hogwarts wearing mostly skirts and dresses, gaining looks of approval from purebloods who don't know anything about muggle fashion but also many confused looks from muggleborns who maybe clock him as queer long before he knows it himself.

I think a lot of what makes fanfiction so magical is writers taking the time to explore tiny elements that were imagined into existence in the source material and then abandoned. It's the deep dive into that t-shirt, the forgotten gift, the nickname, the spare key, the anger they swallowed down, the trauma they supressed, the love they denied, the story that wasn't mainstream enough to make it. It's the little things getting their moment to shine and I fucking love that and I will fight for it always.

never really talked about it here but i took a sort of long break from writing lotf recently, but i’m finally back to writing it! been working on it on and off over the last week or two, and chapter four’s slowly coming along. it’s about halfway written i’d say? and i broke 20k total a few days ago
