Is one of anyone else's favorite scenes in aftg that chapter in The Kings Men where the team is on the drive to Binghamton and Neil spends the entire second half of the trip talking to Andrew. Like:
Neil wanting to sit and talk exy with the rest of the team but that would mean Andrew would be left alone in the back of the bus.
Neil staring and not knowing what it was he found so interesting (beautiful) about Andrew's figure.
Neil calling Andrew just so Andrew would look at him and he'd be able to better study him. (And not being embarrassed or thinking anything of it because he is just admiring Andrew and he sees nothing wrong with that)
The whole "I knew I’d look out for only me when the world went to hell. I don’t want to be that person anymore. I want to go back for you.” conversation AND ANDREW GIVING IN
Neil talking about his life and all the places he's been and Andrew talking about his life after foster care (just the fact that they had this conversation with each other that they won't willingly have with anyone else)
ANDREW NEVER TAKING HIS EYES OR ATTENTION OFF NEIL AND LETTING HIM RAMBLE
I love something about Andrew being the one who tells Neil everyone is betting on his sexuality.
NEIL SAYING HE DOESNT SWING AND NEVER WILL BECAUSE THE ONLY PERSON HE WANTS IS ANDREW, followed by Andrew's "don't say stupid things", AND THEN FOLLOWED WITH NEIL'S "stop me" AND KISS (that he initiated)
Everything about this little portion of the chapter I love so much.
its so sick to me that the rumors of jean sleeping his way onto the ravens are widespread but not one person has stopped for a moment to remember that jean started playing with them at 16 years old.
"jean moreau slept with the entire starting line" did he? or did a bunch of 20 year olds fuck a 16 year old?? Like I know it's 2007 but nobody is talking about that?
I wanna see more andreil "arguments" that's just them being petty assholes to each other. andrew calls neil an idiot on a plane one time and neil tells him "we are 32,000 feet in the air"
still to this day thinking about neil, who had to be forgettable to survive, and andrew, with a photographic memory
just thinking about Andrew having a rough session with Bee and she just gets up in the middle of it and leaves and Andrew sits in silence for a moment because he lost the fucking plot he has no clue why she just decided to leave and the she just comes back into the room with Neil who had been waiting in the lobby and Neil sits down next to Andrew and he's already got earbuds in and Andrew can faintly hear one of his playlists blaring and Neil just waits for the ok and then he's curling himself around Andrew and basically falling asleep while he and Bee finish their session.
Every day. Every damn day I wake up and wonder how Wymack must have felt hearing Jean say, “Kevin never once doubted you’d take him in … I laughed at him. I’d never taken him for a dreamer.”
I wonder how he let that sink in, thought over and over again of his first interactions with the kid and rewriting his perceptions with the context that not only did Kevin know that was his dad, but that Kevin trusted him. Unquestionably, before Wymack even did anything, Kevin ran to him because he believed that Wymack was someone safe he could run to. I wonder if Wymack thought about “my father comes to all my games, that is enough” knowing that Kevin truly meant it, maybe always has.
I wonder how Wymack felt then, when later, much much later, that broken boy who laughed at his son for believing in a father he never met calls him out of the blue. When, before Wymack could even get a single word in, begs him, voice wet and desperate why did you take him in?
I wonder how Wymack felt after the phone call ends. Hearing Josten, arguably his most distrustful kid, telling him “I’ve got him coach” and then hanging up the phone, and wondering if Rhemmen has enough strength to watch Jean eventually get to a place similar to where Neil’s at now. To finally learn, slowly but surely, how to trust. I wonder if that made him appreciate Kevin’s trust all the more.
just… I wonder
Neil knows love exists because Andrew is full of it. He sees it when Andrew cooks two different batches of pancakes, one batch being regular and the other chocolate chip, because he knows Neil doesn’t like sweets.
He sees it when Andrew specifically puts sticky notes on the wall next to their front door because he knows Neil is likely to see them and be reminded of things he needs to do that day.
He sees it when he and Andrew drive hours to listen to Aaron give his valedictorian speech at his university graduation.
And he feels it when Andrew cradles his head in the dead of night and reminds him who he is. Saying:
“You are Neil Josten, a nuisance with a smart mouth. And you are home.”
he told betsy to go ahead with using any information from their sessions if it made jean feel even slightly comfortable. he asked someone he hadn't spoken to properly in years to make space for jean to heal. he held jean's hand. he held jean's face. he left the room without argument when jean asked him to. he knew jean liked some of the trojans. he grounded jean's mind when he was slipping. he locked himself in a room in distress when he thought jean was dead. he agreed to do an interview with jean knowing the comments they would have to face. he asked if jean would teach him french when riko wasn't looking. he wrote jean messages at the back of postcards. he got jean a little bear magnet, among many others. he made jean promise not to take his life. he told jean he didn't want to lose him.
Mayhaps I just have way too much hubris, but I feel like we as a fandom could make that "100th place" climb higher if we just intentionally create and consume more fanfics
Then immediately runs away.
Neil Josten the man that you are
neil is so funny cause hes like “no.. i cant start a fight.. it doesnt match my fake personality ive put on for everyone…” and then proceeds to call kevin a deadweight hasbeen cripple
what did you expect, captain?
