My bf has been telling me the recent discourse that has been surrounding Kevin Day on this god awful social media platform (I live in peace and harmony where everyone I interact with/follow likes him so I’m having a great time)

BUT WITH THAT HERE IS WHAT I HAVE TO SAY

stop reading solely from Neil’s perspective, or if you are going to, at least acknowledge that he is unreliable.

We as readers know that we cannot trust any opinion that comes out of that kids mouth and this is proven multiple times not only by him straight up lying but by the way he interacts with the world around him and his private thoughts on situations. Why WOULD this deeply traumatized 19 year old runaway have sound characterization of everyone he is around.

Kevin is a character that is rooted fundamentally in his environment, he is a product of that. If you want to make critiques about how that is written, be my guest, you absolutely should, but you should not completely disregard his narrative purposes because of your problematic fav.

He is 21, a college student trying to not only heal from what should have been a career ruining injury but also just the mental hellscape that he abruptly left and abandoned after spending his entire childhood submitting to, and the future it provided. I think it’s okay if he’s a little rude sometimes, he’s human.

They all are, that is the point.

Something so insane about reading aftg as a fairly young teenager in high school, and then ‘The Sunshine Court’ coming out while I’m a freshman in college

I used to think Kevin and Neil were so much older than me and so grown up despite their situations, and now BEING that age I’m like “damn they really were just kids”

It’s just so odd to put in perspective, I can barely get up for my lectures on time IMAGINE HAVING THE LITERAL MAFIA ON YOUR ASS!!! WTF!!!

“You two could at least say hello,” Wymack said, somewhat aggrieved. 

“There’s no point,” Kevin said. “All they are is a distraction.“ 

"It’s called a support network. Look it up." 

"Thea is watching from South tonight,” Kevin said, looking to the elevated VIP box. It was too far away and too high up for Neil to make out any faces, but there was a small crowd gathered at the windowed walls already. Knowing the Court was here to watch them play sent a chill through Neil’s veins. Kevin dragged his stare back to Wymack’s face and said, “and my father comes to all of my games. That is enough." 

On Wymack’s other side, Abby’s gaze softened. Wymack’s jaw worked for a moment before he could say in an even tone, "Your mother would be proud of you." 

"Not just of me,” Kevin said in a rare bout of humanity.

I’m going to casually drop this here and pretend I’m not embarrassed with myself 😅 I wrote a Kevaaron fic that is VERY sexual, anyway!

The saddest part about Jean dying in every other universe isnt that his love story is the only one he survives. Its that Kevin couldnt have saved him, even if he stayed at evermore. If Kevin has somehow managed to get him out, it wouldnt have been enough. Neil wouldnt have been enough if he stayed at evermore, or if he was there from the start. If he had become a fox? Nope, not having Renee, Kevin, Neil and even Andrew wouldnt have been enough.

I cant entirely say Jeremys the reason he makes it either, its all the Trojans, its being in California. Having freedom. Having gay coaches, a sunshine captain/boyfriend, roommates/best friends, its cody and xavier and Renees list, Neils twisted smile and blant ignorance of the rules. Its all these tiny details, these small fragments of happiness that give him the strength and courage to live

I don't know anything about the raven AUs or what the extra content has to say but can you imagine if Jean, Kevin, Neil and Andrew were all at evermore at once, because ive been dwelling on it. It would be endless fights. Fists would fly so often. We'd have the whole kevjean situationship plus the andreil mess that is them. Also, jeaneil would be THE power couple. If they had been partners for years, can you imagine the brutality of their insults, oml. I would never want to piss them off or youd just be thrown through the nine rings of hell that is verbal abuse.

And if Andrew still made the deal for nicky and Aaron (not sure that would work but its something to consider)

Would Aaron and Andrew be partners? How would they handle all their problems if they are stuck together 24/7? Do you think Aaron would still fall in love? Would Andrew take medical classes so Aaron can be a doctor? Do you this Aaron has PTSD, thinking of Talia everytime a beating happens?

Dont even get me started on how it would destroy Nicky. He is not built to handle any of that. Plus what Riko would do to him and Andrew, eventually even to Neil. Riko caught Jean by simple looks and Andrew constantly pointed out "that" look on Neil, they would be fucked.

But it would be so intresting to read.

I don't ship kevjean not because its not there but because its been destroyed. I believe Kevin loved him back but knew it was a horrible idea, he saw what Riko did to Jean. He knew what it would cost them and so he ignored it, but now that they are both out, its too late. They have hurt each other way too much. They are starcrossed lovers, doomed by the narrative. They love each other just as much as they hate each other. It was real in every way they could never have.

Hear me out, Kevin knows Jean loves(loved) him. And I'm kinda convinced he might have loved him back but Kevin "its easier to keep him heterosexual" Day, Kevin "they were supposed to be a warning" Day. He knew what would happen to them if they went down that road, yet he learned how to speak french for him, he bought him magnets and postcards and made him promise to survive for both of their sakes. Kevin who fought for Jean in the only ways he knew he could, who kept in touch with him even after he made it out and knew how badly that would hurt Jean, but he couldn't Let. Him. Go. Kevin knows Jean has always like Jeremy, hes aware that Jean likes men, he has to have seen how Jean looks at him, if Riko and Andrew and Jeremy all knew from moments of being with them, Kevin couldn't have ignored it, not truly. I think Kevin did love him, but was so conditioned to never betray Riko, its still ingrained in him despite everything, that he suppressed it as far as he could to protect them both. Maybe thats part of the reason he gave him to Jeremy, he trusts him, he knows hes been through a lot and is healing from it, but he also knows that Jean already liked him and would eventually cave, at least letting him be his friend, healing the things Kevin is still too scared to confront.

Neil and Jeremy are both wearing a baggy T-shirt with jorts. The only difference being that Jeremy looks like he could be on the cover of a beach magazine while Neil looks like he dug his clothes out of the bottom of a goodwill dumpster.

Neil is pissed.

The only reason Kevin could get out was because he was injured. Jean was "healthy", he could play and he wasnt free. Kevin had a choice. Make it out and leave Jean behind or stay where worse things will happen. Taking Jean would have never worked 😔 and I'm sure a part of Kevin died when he realized that.

Maybe because he's sold to the moriyamas? And that both of them wouldn't make it out? Jean would probably be killed or beaten horribly after because he has no choicenbut to stay with his owners?

The fandom keeps taking about how they want Jeremy to get red carded defending Jean (if anyone is going to do that it would be Cat but yall arent ready for that convo) or for Jeremy to yell and go off on kevin for leaving Jean at evermore. I think Jeremy would understand, he wouldn't like it and may be angry but I think he would be more hurt that Kevin had to choose between saftey and betraying a friend. HOWEVER! I counter that Neil would be the one to get onto Kevin. Picture this, its a first banquet since Jean became a Trojan and Neil finds him and they start having a conversation in French about his new team or whatever random topic. Jeremy sees them and immediately is like 'nope, no way, last time these two were alone Jean came home in the middle of the night in shambles.' And goes over there. He doesnt say anything, just stands by Jean giving Neil heavy side eye. Of course Neil being Neil glares straight back. 'The fuck is his problem. He wants to be pissed at me when he failed to protect Jean?' Jean steps in at this point, trying to keep Neil from starting a fight.

"Do not start anything here. Jeremy's done nothing wrong and I am not cleaning up your messes.' Jean scolds in french.

"Nothing wrong? He was supposed to keep you safe. Which he failed at by the way."

"I dont need anyone to keep me safe." Jean glares at him, defending himself to which Jeremy takes one more step closer, just in case. Kevin and Andrew catch onto the commotion and walk over, taking stance next to them.

"Really? If we honestly believed that we wouldnt have sent you to the Trojans, you may as well have been a fox." Neil loosely gestures at Jeremy, dismissive.

"You and I both know he could never fit in as a fox." Kevin cuts in, switching them to English

Neil turns to him full of animosity. The glare of a Wesninski, its enough to make his stomach drop.

"I think youve already had enough say in where he ends up considering you left him at evermore in the first place." Kevin recoils, taking four steps back and staggering on the fifth, a look of horror on his face. When he glances at Jean, hes looking down. He knows its not true but its how it felt. Neil doesn't have to say anything else, Kevin knows what the ravens are capable of, hes seen it, on Jean, on himself, on Neil. The twisted smile on Neils face is enough to force Kevin to look away. Neil switches back to French, in a calmer tone.

"He is meant to keep you safe and help you get through all the shit they did to you. If he is incapable of doing that, you know where to find me. If you are hurt under his watch again." Back to english "I'll handle him." He glares at Jeremy then turns away, Andrew a step behind, staying between them.

I have been dwelling on the ravens, I need to preface this tangent with, I am not at all disregarding, belittling or excusing any of what these people have done, but I neeed to deep dive my thoughts because i cant be the only one who thought about this

Spoliers for like literally everything 😅

All of the ravens were failed, not just Kevin and Jean or even Neil. Even Riko and Greyson were failed. They were children. They were abused and manipulated and treated like they werent even people. They were forced into solitude, conditioned into violence and I can understand why most of them turned into monsters. If you really take a step back to think about it, its survival of the fittest, but being the fittest means being the cruelest, because if you were the absolute worst, no one would hurt you. 'If I become the monster, maybe I will be safe from what they do to each other'. How many times do you think the thought crossed their minds of "I cant be weak or I will end up like Jean, a punching bag, a play thing" or "If I mess up, if I dont give it my everything, they will break me like they did Kevin, but they will be more thorough this time, theyd end me" these are children, how else would they respond to these horrible conditions, how can you expect an abused dog to not attack. They are straved and beaten and beraided all for the sake of a 'game'. Greyson was a normal kid before he became a raven, and I dont think those straws would have ever broken of he hadnt become one because they probably never would have exisited. Yes, he is a horrible person now, but he didnt ask for this and in another life, he could have been someone. An older brother with a family and a goal for life, but he was no longer a brother and he had no family, only 'teammates'. I am so hoping that in one of the next books that the world sees what they did to these kids. I need doors busted down and people arrested, if Neil's uncle gets ahold of the Moriyamas, I dont want him to kill him or arrest him because he has always been weary of that, no I need him to tear down everything he has built, to show the people who he is and what his true colors are. I need the world to see that Riko was murdered because his uses ended. I need them to see that these kids are dropping like flies because they cant be people anymore, they dont know how. I want eyewitnesses and video footage making it out and it being undeniable that these kids were failed. They were supposed to be protected, loved and taught. College is supposed to be the gateway to adulthood and they were stripped of their freedom and made into machines. This breaks my heart. I know its so easy to hate these characters and to be angry, which is completely vaild and how we are supposed to view them because they are bad people, but at the end of the day they are children, they never got wymacks second chance or a found family. They didnt have a Renee to pull them out or an Andrew for protection, maybe if they had, things might have been different.

Breaking my own heart over here.
