TMAGP4 - Taking Notes / Whiplash 2014
would give anything to be the greasy, bloodied, angry boy in a white shirt who is destined for tragedy
Rating: 9.8 of 10
A story about how one young ambitious jazz drummer Andrew Neyman (Miles Teller), captured the attention, and then some, of a talented but ruthless teacher Terence Fletcher (JK Simmons), Whiplash is one of the most electric and intense film about music.
Partly inspired by its writer and director's, Damien Chazelle, own experiences as a jazz drummer at school, the movie defies every stereotype one might expect from such film. Pursuit of greatness is such a prevalent theme in movies about music/dance/sports/whatever to the extent that the trope becomes boring, but Whiplash managed to find a fresh new angle to the trope with refreshing complexity. As we see Fletcher barking orders to his scared students, and as we see him encouraging a little girl to keep playing music; as we see Andrew practicing his beats over and over again through the night, and as we see him having dinner with his loving but unappreciative father, we understand them better as we see different sides of them, and we appreciate them as morally grey characters that they are. JK Simmons stole the show as Fletcher--but with every smirk, every twinkle, and every glance, Miles Teller successfully conveyed Andrew's drive, his humiliation, and his ambition through silence. He also played a convincing drum on screen (for non-drummer like me) too, which always help elevate a movie.
Whiplash is also an extremely intense movie, like you wouldn't believe. With tight shots, sweat, blood, pure determination, strive for perfection and no tolerance for anything less, watching Whiplash is like an endurance sport for your heart. TL;DR Filled with more thrill than any of recent action movies combined (okay, maybe not Mad Max: Fury Road), Whiplash is an experience like no other--and with good jazz music, too? You can't lose.
Obsession beats talent every time.
a whiplash 2014 x reader short imagine
the night that fletcher invited drew to perform at the jvc jazz festival he ran to your apartment. his key copy struggling against the lock of the chipped up brown door. you turned to the sound of your door, slightly frantic at the sudden door slam running through the small apartment.
neiman ran through the hallway, practically hurling himself into your sprawled figure that laid curled in your blanket. oomph! your arms wrapped around him, his body heat instantly melting into yours.
“drew baby? are you okay?!” your voice shook with worry, confused with his sudden appearance. “fletcher!” he sat upright, his body still on yours, pressing the two of you deeper into the rundown leather sofa.
“what about fletcher baby?” your hand gently grabbed his, rubbing his fingers affectionately. “fletcher invited me to perform at jvc as his drummer, they’ll be using the same music from the studio band. i’m going to take the opportunity.”
you hesitantly looked at his eyes, trying to see if he was serious. the glint in his eyes shown through, making you sigh. “are you sure? remember what happened last time.” the thought made him tense but he still nodded.
“i can do it. i’ll be better than last time.” your empty hand found his cheek, pulling him forward, leaving a soft kiss on his nose. “you’re better already, just don’t go getting in anymore accidents. you know how worried sick i was last time.”
your hands ran through your hair, reminiscing on the events that happened the day of the car crash drew was in. you had went insane seeing the blood on the side of his head when he entered the stage late.
if he hasn’t tackled fletcher himself, you were sure you would’ve been the one to beat the man. neiman smiled, “i’ll be okay, i promise.” his pinkie finger connected to yours, a physical sign of his word. “you better. now tell me all the details for the day of the jazz festival.”
neiman spent the entire night talking your ear off, telling you where and when the the festival would take place. it was obvious he had missed playing the drums, and who were you to stop him from doing the one thing that brought him joy.
conversations turned into words and words turned into interrupted kisses. you had fallen in love with his deep sunken eyes and the faint scars that littered his jaw and neck. it wasn’t long till the two of you had fallen asleep with your lips peppering every mark and ident on his skin.
