This guy is my new hero. I LOVE learning about native food plants that just grow everywhere without human help.

The database is a little clunky to use (especially on a phone), but still loads of excellent information.

Serious complaining and recreational complaining are very different activities and they’re barely related to each other.

Serious complaining can mean “this upsets me, I want it to change” or “this upsets me, and I just want to get it off my chest and be heard” or simply “I am frustrated and want to vent until I feel better”.

Recreational complaining is fun social bonding and it doesn’t have to mean anything or result in change. It’s not the same as negativity because the purpose isn’t to make you or anyone else feel worse. It’s enjoyable in the way that snarking at bad movies with your friends is enjoyable. Social grooming without the fleas.

I personally wanna see less 'you are not a burden/it's not work to love you' and more 'you are worth the work it takes to love you.' I KNOW I'm a burden sometimes. that isn't such a terrible thing! humans are strong. we can carry burdens. and it is work for me to be there for my friends, but it's work I'm willing to do.

we need to acknowledge this because pretending love isn't work will never make people like me feel less guilty for accepting love. we need to talk about it so people don't feel bad for having boundaries and not always being up to do the work. we need to accept it so we can properly appreciate what others do for us and what we're doing for them.

yes it does take work to love you. but guess what? you still deserve love, and you deserve people who are willing to do the work to love you. it doesn't make you bad. all love take work. and everyone is worth it.

Scripts for Talking to Doctors

We aggressively believe that patients shouldn’t have to do a bunch of emotional labor to get their needs met by their healthcare providers, but the reality we live in means this is an important skill to have as a spoonie.

Luckily, we have some new resources for you!

💊 This super long thread on code words to use with doctors [CW exaggerated ableism/use of slurs], kicked off by the Cliff’s Notes on “How To Negotiate Your Disability Without Curling Into A Ball And Weeping More Than Once Or Twice A Week *Or* Murdering The Entire Universe (More Than Once Or Twice A Week).”

Covered topics:

Getting pain meds without being labeled as a drug-seeker.

Getting mobility devices despite enormous stigma.

Getting a “medibuddy” or advocate in with you when your doctor likes enforced isolation tactics.

Taking notes and being organized without ruffling any feathers.

Introducing “googled” information with a little fibbing.

Tactical crying.

…and basically being manipulative as hell, because sometimes that’s really, frustratingly necessary in order to get past ableist gatekeeping.

💊 This response to a request for help talking to a surgeon and getting him “to take me and my mysterious health issues seriously while still coming off as a ‘good patient.’”

💊 Our archive of advice under the “Dealing with Doctors” tag (yeah, we’re mad this has to exist, too.) And to those about to enter appointments… we salute you.

I keep hate-reading plague literature from the medieval era, but as depressed as it makes me there is always one historical tidbit that makes me feel a little bittersweet and I like to revisit it. That’s the story of the village of Eyam.

Huh? Aren't they all/most of them bots? Those were the first 6-7 followers I got immediately after posting absolutely anything, and therefore blocked them.

They're the vast majority of my followers for now which is slightly disappointing lmao

To the select few sort-of-NSFW blogs that follow me, I love you all. Like idk how this appeals to you but I'm glad to be of service.

Also, I really didn't know that many women were into pegging men, this makes me feel happy for the future lol.

Some people forget that not liking something is not equal to being against it

tumblr still thinks you’re not allowed to dislike anything unless you have some ethical reason for it

So there are people out there who have a consistent mood for most of the day? My mood changes every other 5 minutes at any slight inconvenience.

Waitwaitwait. Do you mean, like, the fan hum + disc clicking? Or do you mean actual electronics humming? Because I can definitely hear my PC, but I can't hear my phone or my charger like some people can.

There's no way neurotypicals can't hear discs working and fans humming and their pc in general. They cannot think it's actually silent. I refuse, it's impossible.

the fact neurotypicals can’t hear the electronics hum doesn’t sit right with me. they’re such strange creatures. what do you mean you can’t hear the computer going babdbbsjsbsbhmmmmmm? it’s very much there! in fact, at times it’s too loud and i cry over it! you have to be able to hear it!

I want other young people to understand that if the extent of your radical action is posting “eat the rich!” on social media and waiting for somebody to tell you a revolution has started, nothing will change and you’ll get arrested in the Third Red Scare and that’ll be it

What’s Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS), and why do so many autistic people have it?

I learned about this the other day, when I posted about palinopsia (visual trailing/afterimages) being common in autistic people, and a couple of our followers told me about their VSS. I did some more research, and discovered that I also have it.

Visual Snow Syndrome is a neurological condition that interferes with visual processing. It’s caused by hyperactivity and hyper-excitability of nerves in certain areas of the brain that process visual information.

The core feature of VSS is constantly seeing tiny, fuzzy “feedback” in the environment. It’s kind of like seeing the world through a staticky TV screen. Some people’s visual static is larger than others. Mine is relatively fine-grained, but it gets bigger and more obvious in low lighting.

Some of the other symptoms of VSS include:

Palinopsia (visual trailing/afterimages)

Photophobia (sensitivity to light)

Increased and enhanced ectopic phenomenon, such as floaters, phosphenes, and Scheerer’s phenomenon

Seeing glare, starbursts, and halos around lights

Difficulty seeing at night/in the dark

Seeing random flashes of light and/or color, without cause from the environment

It’s common for people with VSS to experience comorbid migraines, but VSS is not the same thing as migraine aura.

So, why do autistic people often have VSS?

It comes down to the fact that VSS is caused by the hyper-excitability of neurons in areas of the brain that process visual information. A core feature of autism is hyper-excitable neurons, especially in areas of the brain that have to do with sensory processing. So it makes sense that autism would often inadvertently cause VSS.

Here are some illustrations of visual phenomenon that VSS causes, in case you want a better understanding of what the world looks like for me and many other autistic people.

Starbursts around lights:

Floaters:

I hope y’all have learned something :)

I’ve found it very intriguing to realize that the way I see the world is more unique than I once knew!
