just a very gentle reminder that there is no being "late" to fanfic! whether it's a work that's 1 week old, 1 month old, 1 year old, or even older, i can promise you that the writer is still just as happy to see you reading their work today as they would've been to see you 1 year ago or 5 years ago or whatever the timeline might be.

James who ran like his life depended on it when Sirius told him what he had done.

James whose only thought was Remus, and the fact that he had to save him from his own self because he knew that Remus would never forgive himself if he hurt Snape.

James who was ready to throw himself to death without another thought to push Severus away from the shack before just as moony is ready to pounce at him.

James who stays by the door the whole night to make sure moony was okay, and then by his side in the hospital wing when he wakes up.

James who holds Remus as he cries his heart out when he hears about what Sirius has done, who nurses him back to health as he becomes a shell of his own self.

James who comes learns how to take the muggle train to go to Whales every day during that summer because he can't apparate yet, even though Remus told him not to come. But he still goes and sits with hope in the living room or helps her around the farm when Remus doesn't come out of his room.

James who keeps bringing him books from Effie's library everyday since Hope told him Remus had been rereading his old books because he didn't want to go out to the library, and so he sets them by his door and sits there with his back against the wood, babbling about nothing and everything through it till the time for the last train back rolls around.

That is, untill Remus opens the door and James falls down on the ground, his eyes wide and his glasses askew as he watched the upside down face of the best friend he hadn't seen in a month.

Remus has a fond exasperated look on his face at the sight of the sweet boy who kept coming back no matter how much he tried to push him away.

They spend that summer running around in fields or sprawled under the shade of the trees as Remus read one of Effie's books and James rested his head in his lap, something that after days evolves into Remus carding his fingers through his wild messy hair, delicately removing his gold rimmed glasses as he dozed off under the shade of the trees while Hope watches them with a small smile on her face from the kitchen window, taking out her camera to capture the sweet moment because she knew that one day the oblivious pair would want it.

sirius who has to LEARN to take care of remus, to not rush off, to not assume he can physically keep up. remus who uses a cane and sirius who at first is kind of embarrassed to be seen with him in public (because of his “never show weakness” upbringing), but who also immediately glares at anyone who looks funny at remus. sirius whose boundless energy both enchants and exhausts remus, who has to learn how to take care of his boyfriend when fatigue catches up with him. sirius who is forced to learn to be comfortable with the quiet (which is actually good for him). sirius who researches remus’ conditions (chronic fatigue, arthritis, problems that the doctors still can’t diagnose) to better learn how to help him. sirius who comes with remus to his appointments, or drops him off with a kiss, depending on how he feels.

According to the post below, AO3 issued a DMCA takedown after finding out that all works before March 2025 were scraped and uploaded as a dataset to potentially train AI. The ability to take legal action against scum like this is the direct result of people donating to AO3 so they can keep functioning and they don't pocket any of it because they are a non-profit organization.

So when you see the AO3 donation drives, please remember that this is what the money is going toward and support it when you can!

AO3 has been scraped, once again.

As of the time of this post, AO3 has been scraped by yet another shady individual looking to make a quick buck off the backs of hardworking hobby writers. This Reddit post here has all the details and the most current information. In short, if your fic URL ends in a number between 1 and 63,200,000 (inclusive), AND is not archive locked, your fic has been scraped and added to this database.

I have been trying to hold off on archive locking my fics for as long as possible, and I've managed to get by unscathed up to now. Unfortunately, my luck has run out and I am archive locking all of my current and future stories. I'm sorry to my lovelies who read and comment without an account; I love you all. But I have to do what is best for me and my work. Thank you for your understanding.

Fanfic is a free hobby.

It's one of the last few things we can have as a society that's free. You can engage, for free. People give you things (art, stories, etc), for free.

Don't buy into the consummerism just because it's everywhere else.

You don't have to consume everything you interact with. You don't have to use things, just because they exist.

You're allowed (still, for now), to have things that are enjoyable for free.

Do you realise how insane the world is? We don't have many places where we can just be, for free anymore, but ao3 is. Did you notice we don't have ads in ao3? We don't have pop ups? Where ELSE do we not have that?

Where else can you just go and not have to wait for a commercial to be over or for ads to be on the sidelines?

I don't think the younger people understand, but the whole of internet used to be like this. YouTubers would do Youtube for free, just because. You couldn't monetise your internet presence before.

Ao3 is like a little preserved corner of the internet where the old internet used to be, and it's being attacked by people who do not understand that free things are allowed to exist without judgment.

TransActual, a trans-led and trans-run organization in the UK, is looking for statements from UK residents on how the Supreme Court ruling has affected you and/or what you worry the implications will be. More information on their Instagram here, but they are accepting comments from not just trans people but also cis women who disagree with the ruling and/or cis women who do not meet white western beauty standards. This is a great thing to do that’ll take about five minutes—email them at policy@transactual.org.uk. They said they’ll be using statements “on our social media channels, in the press, with policy makers and in other parts of TransActual's work.”

hey! donate to uk trans charities today because it’s gonna be a rough one

okay big talk time. in light of the UK Supreme Court ruling, i'm seeing a lot of posts about fandom spaces. i woke up to see a tiktok that says "if you write fanfic, there's blood on your hands too",,, so let's talk about it.

because there is no refuting that fandom spaces keep JKR relevant. there is no refuting that by producing any kind of media based on this franchise, we are engaging with her and we are keeping her universe relevant. we cannot deny that.

we often see people turn around and say "jkr would hateee what we write!" and that's true. that's so very true, but it isn't enough. your headcanons and your stories and your art Are Not Enough. particularly over on tiktok: if you post HP content over on that platform, you are promoting JKR. my existence in this space as a trans man is NOT an act of protest. everything else i do is, so what do we do about that?

we NEED to be talking about these things. about jkr, about her money, about her actions, about the bigotry in the source material, and if you are not in a position where you can have those conversations, then you need to be listening. because engagement with jkr is infact life of death.

and we carry that guilt. we do, of course we do. if you are somebody who hasn't yet been able to let go of this series like me, then we carry that guilt. even more so if you are a member of any of the communities that jkr has harmed - the guilt is heavy.

but,,, let me make one thing clear: this is not your guilt.

if you are not profiting her. directly, then you are carrying guilt that is not yours to carry. that guilt is hers to bear, and the lives we are about to lose are on her conscious. we have been forced, time and time again, to carry the weight of her bigotry.

but,,, we're carrying it. and i think there's a certain amount of guilt that makes us better. i think there's a certain amount of guilt that makes us more conscious human beings, and that makes us more receptive to these discussions.

you can use that guilt, you really can. you can talk. you can listen. you can educate. you can step away if the guilt gets too much. you can use that guilt for something good.

do NOT push it away. whilst it isn't ours to carry, we are not in a position where we can throw that guilt away and wash our hands of it - we are here, we are engaging, we have to accept that. if we simply pretend as though we are not, then all we do is cause harm.

because fandom spaces can do a lot of good, especially for those that jkr has harmed. fandom spaces can do so much good, but only if we are conscious of the ways in which we are engaging, and we are willing to sit and have these difficult conversations.

if i were not in the position i am in now, i would leave. i would leave this fandom space and at this point? i am in fact urging those of you are able to, to go. for your own sakes and the sakes of everyone around you.

but as someone who has been having conversations about JKR for ages? i am in no position to step back. i'm in no position to turn away and give up. not when there are so many people who benefit from these discussions and who benefit from safe spaces.

and the reason it's a safe space? it's because I Talk. because i Have These Discussions. and no matter how much i do, i am still promoting her when i go on to post a headcanon or update my fics. i am still promoting her when i engage in this space.

and there's still guilt.

don't chuck that guilt aside, let it fuel you in making safe spaces safe again.

there is absolutely no refuting that by being in this space we are causing harm. so if you are not in a position to leave this space, here's some things you can do to make it easier for everyone both in and out of it:

Listen. if you are not in a position to talk about JKR, then actively listen. actively listen, understand, process, and adapt.

Merchandise: stop posting your merch, secondhand or not. you know that you get comments asking "where did you get this!?", stop posting it. makes that small adjustment for wider good

Keep educated: on the bigotry in the books so that you aren't perpetuating it, on jkr's actions, on politics. keep educated as much as you can to make sure that you are not unwillingly causing harm in what you are doing

Block: block those who are going to the studios, who are posting merch, who are talking about the reboot, who are doing ANYTHING to support her. if you see a video? comment on it. the continued relevance of people in this space who have supported a bigot is Immense. do not allow for complacency - bigotry is bigotry no matter how many views it gets you.

and above all, hold that guilt. hold it. feel it. utilise it.

and if you are in a position where you can leave this space? then i encourage you to do so. i encourage you to Move On, and find new ventures. i encourage you to do that if you can. and if you can't, then i'll still be here to guide you through it all and keep having these difficult talks.

trans lives are more precious than ever

i've spent the last couple of days feeling truly sickened and hopeless, and i haven't yet figured out what it all means for my place in fandom. it has felt like there hasn't been anything i could add to the conversations taking place as someone with almost no platform, and at a time when voices far more eloquent and important than mine were already having an impact.

however, more than ever the events of the last few days have shown me how important it is to speak up, even in my tiny corner of the world, even if it's clumsy, even if I cannot see the visible impact. this should not - and cannot - be the burden for trans people to speak about alone, and i am ashamed it took me so long to say something.

trans women are women and trans rights are human rights and the world is a better place with you in it.

if you are reading this and you are trans: i love you. i love you and your life is precious and you deserve the entire world. you are a miracle. please know my inbox is always open if you ever need a place to just be Heard. i love you 🫂🫂🫂

idk how much longer i will be in this space, but however long it ends up being, i intend to be loud about this. trans folks are too important not to be.

i know i'm a massive hypocrite, i am in this space. i write for this space. i've also lost many trans friends for being in this space.

and i get the sentiments, i get that these come from a good place. but right now, Harry Potter fandom initiatives aren't what we need.

we don't need a fundraiser where people pay for a prompt and the money is donated - share the donation link on your fandom accounts and pray that, if this fandom is as inclusive and supportive as it claims to be, people will donate anyway.

i'm one person you do NOT have to listen to me, but there is a Pit in my Stomach at the idea of trying to combat this ruling by producing more art for this space.

what we need right now is discussions about reach. what we need right now is discussions about tiktok. what we need right now are big, heavy, uncomfortable discussions about what we are doing within this space, if we are going to keep doing it, and what we need to do to reduce further harm if we decide to stay.

the wounds from this ruling and so raw and even as someone in this space, seeing initiatives designed to help raise money for trans charities being rooted in the creation of fics and art? something that gives her even more traction? salt salt salt.

and i cannot imagine how heartbreaking it would feel to be a trans person NOT in this space and see that this is how people decided to combat it.

people are allowed to hate us for being here. we can't argue against the fact we keep her relevant or give her traction. we can do the best we possibly can, but people can still hate us for being here. they are completely within their right to. and trans people outside of this space? they will not feel supported by this. not at all. heck, even i don't.

i just,,, again. one person's opinion. but,, share donation links absolutely! but right now my efforts are entirely focused on formulating and eventually having discussion about what we do from here on out, and not on the creation of a wide-spreading initiative in which people need to receive Harry Potter art to donate.

don't make them, don't post them, don't reblog them. just don't give free advertising to a millionaire giddy over stripping trans people of their rights.

being a POC in the Marauders/HP fandom is really interesting to me because it seems and feels like a really predominantly white space, which, hey, nothing new! and that does come with some challenges. for the most part, they're fairly under the radar.

it's things like being able to count the POC in a discord server on one hand, even though there's 100+ people in the community.

it's people not taking into account racial dynamics whether that be in a fic, or in a tiktok, tumblr, whatever. there are innate power imbalances in our society (regardless of what country you live in) and to assume because this fandom is a largely open, liberal and leftist space, that they don't carry over to fandom, is exceptionally naive. buuuuut, we live and learn, so people can and should be given a certain amount of grace. but what is unforgivable is to have them pointed out to you and for you to dismiss, ignore or belittle them. Not only that, but you as a white person, do not get to be the forgiving voice to another white person when they make one of these mistakes. please please please respect and understand that.

there's also (and i'm sorry if this is controversial and frankly it makes me really nervous to even write this), a trend of assigning ethnicities, cultures and races to characters in stories without having a proper understanding of them, or having a particular reason for doing so. I'm never going to sit here and say "you as a white person shouldn't write about ____ race!", because I don't believe that. but what I would really, really love to see, is for white creators and writers to ask themselves some questions beforehand:

what does the race of this character add to the story outside of me chasing clout with a particular group of people/is it necessary for me to be writing the lived experience of a culture/ethnicity I've never taken the time to learn about?

if so, why?

am i the right person to be doing this?

are my actions outside of my writing towards these POC reflective of this?

i also think it's really important to remember that unconscious bias is a thing, and it's really easy for us to spot in your writing if it isn't something you've addressed. Not only that, but even if you write the most well-researched POC in your fic, even if you're sharing posts about Lebanon and Palestine, none of that matters if your actions when interacting with us show us that you are indifferent to the power dynamics at play with you being a white person, often with a large audience, in this space. virtue signalling is spectacularly unhelpful if you're writing checks your ass can't cash.

that being said, I think throwing 'racist' around as a term at people who make mistakes is really unhelpful. because every situation has context and nuance, and dogpiling never helps anybody. there are opportunities for learning, developing and understanding here. but please remember, if a POC tells you something is upsetting, harmful or offensive - even if other POC haven't said that to you - it's not your place as a white person to dismiss that.

i do have a wip on my tbr, silly me (to fall in love with you) by jeonkaktus, which looks like remus and james get together first but i obviously can’t say for sure since i haven’t read it. it’s a soulmates au where remus and james are each other’s soulmates but they don’t know that they’re both sirius’s soulmates as well. the summary sounds like remus and james will get together first! maybe i’ll read it soon 👀
